2004 police impala

my brother in law has a 2004 police impala which is N/A and is interested in getting it tuned for better gas mileage. he does about 85% highway driving on it. Is there a stock bin I can use to help his fuel efficiency? I'm using dhp/tiny tuner

nope, but he could get a 3.05 FDR diff and swap that in with the gearing adjustment in the pcm.

if his upstream o2 sensor has 50k+ miles on it its likely skewed and changing fueling.

you could bump timing at cruise but its probably got the 04+ tables already.

tell him to drive like he has an egg under his right foot

I will recommend that to him, but I wonder if he will actually want to do it. he liked the tune idea because I could do it for free. I think it has the series 2 3800, but I will have him check and make sure. if it is the series 3 than we should just leave it alone?

main things that kill fuel econ are sticking brakes, wheel bearings on their way out and an old skewed O2 sensor.

so yeah keeping up on maintenance by spending money is required. a tune cant fix plugs that are wornout or a 100k mile O2 thats running you pig rich instead of stoich

There might be some tuning work you can do, but if it's a police model, he might want to ditch any remnants of police equipment first. I've read that there is a considerable amount of weight in wiring alone.

he got the impala at an auction, they had removed a lot of the interceptor package already.

Most of the time (from what I have seen at the jy) when they auction the vehicle, they basically just cut all the police equipment out of the vehicle first. They leave most of the brackets and wiring behind, and quite a considerable amount.
