Not sure if this is a weather climate thing or not but i've been home in Philly for a few months now from San Diego and on a couple occasions my car idle rpm will raise on its own up to 1500rpm.

Some scary ****, my foot is no where near the pedal. All I can think of is the air temp being so low and cold, unless my throttle position sensor is acting retarded.

San Diego temps never went below 60*, so I'm not sure if this is a air temp thing(don't think it is though) or a mechanical issue.

Anybody experience idle rpm just raising on its own? I personally never seen it happen other than cold mornings on cold start in open loop, which then settles back down as it should
 


only when i had a vac leak. check that your gas pedal cable is moving freely too. the cables can fray up inside and cause issues.
 
Yeah I knew it wasn't a vac leak that's y I didn't mention that but the throttle cable I will recheck. I checked the cable from the throttle side but I have not looked from the pedal end of it. Thanx Scotty....as always
 
if you pull the throttle back to wot at the TB, you can then pull and push the cable in and out. being your holding the cable, you'll feel if theres any binding when you move it.

when they go bad they tend to leave you with a high idle, or stick wide open. < really sucks.

i had to drive like 30 miles one time with a string tied to the tb on my 97 gmc, cable started to stick, next day it snapped. had to get to a dealer for the new cable, no parts stores had it in stock. (this was during a work day, over 100 miles from home)

if its frayed, you replace the whole cable and its housing, its rather easy really, the gas pedal side just hooks on something like on the tb side but easier.
 


I'm still leaning towards a vacuum leak. The IAC is the only other mechanism that would add air, causing an idle surge. Besides something moving the throttle blade, a vacuum leak is all I can think of.

there's almost 15 years of wear and tear on those rubber/plastic lines.
 
Yeah the iac is what I meant to say, mines should be fairly clean. I cleaned it not to long ago
 
I'm also going to lean towards a vacuum leak. It's colder in Philly than San Diego and the air is thinner. Hoses will retract and even a small pinhole won't be an issue in warm air but can cause issues in colder air. The cold air can also cause cracks in your rubber hoses.

My car was doing that and it ended up being the lower intake manifold gaskets. So, have a look at your lower intake manifold. Look in the ducks and see if you have water in there or something similar to these.

I'm in for TPS as well. Been there.. experienced that.. in a camm'd, IC'd, Rockered, Stage 3 head, Headers, and 3.29's in a built trans car. Fun to hold back with crappy stock Bonneville undersized brakes.
 
Yeah it does it intermittently. Intake gaskets look fine and so does the vacuum hoses. Now I can read the TPS with a scanner correct? Just read the throttle position percentage? But yeah it revs when it wants to, usually to around 1200rpm give or take.

Car drives fine and starts with ease every time cold start or closed loop
