I've been standalone for years when I was stationed in Colorado I had no issues. Your 1st gear slip could be attributed to much more than temps.

trans temp? A little over 110 usually going to work in the winters iirc. One time when it was -17 I barley got to 100, but at that point its not like your driving the car fast. But never a slip.What was your avg temp in Colorado

Summers would usually have me around 143 one way to work
As said before the issue could be something else given the broad range of variables
Try both see what you like, regardless its easy to switch to either configuration..Hmm you may have convinced me to go stand alone
