Can anyone recommend a good 3800 engine builder in the New Jersey area? Looking to repair a L36 with a knock. I can pull the engine and deliver.

Besides there aren't even any 3800 guys here really. Let alone any shop that specialize in 3800s
 
The engine is not stock so I don't want to just throw in a rebuilt or junkyard engine. Most American motors are cheap until you start modifying them. Looking for a performance build. Surprised to hear Gtp forum members to install a stock replacement engine. Where are my performance guys ??
 
spend 3 grand on it or buy a used engine, mod the f out of it and be happy you spent 500 instead of 3 grand......

case you haven't heard guys aer putting out 500 hp + on a stock bottom ends. turbos of course, but stock bottom ends.

This is why we are telling you to put a stock engine in.
 
I'm running a $500 junkyard motor. With cam, headers, gen 5, N*, etc... Have had it for 3 years.

Rather than expose your ignorance regarding the platform (3800), maybe you should lay out your plans for the build, ie, what you're trying to achieve and then ask for suggestions on how best to reach that goal. There are many a year's experience here on this forum you so easily berate, yet know so little about. But sure, go drive up to the nearest shop with a PERFORMACE designation on their sign, pay ridiculous amounts of $ to have a 200 mile motor and then don't forget to come back and let us all know how well that worked out for you. Lol...

Take heed of the advice given. If you are truly determined to build an engine, start with a good used motor, low mileage if you can find one. Take all those so called mods off the knocking engine, keep what's good and begin your planned build! The L67/3800 are plentiful, you say you can remove the engine/tranny, so if you can do that, you can do your own build.

What mods do you have?

In my area (not far from yours) L26's aka an L36 with aluminum upper run $300 with low miles. The difference in cost of rebuiilding vs putting your mods onto another engine is likely much higher. I've modded plenty and when an engine heads south, I put the mods onto the next motor. It works out to be quicker and less expensive.
 
Update information received from previous owner.I think the car had 68k on it
zzp trans 4t65E (HD)
3.29 gears
2200 rpm stall
upgraded input shaft
their basic rebuild with a little extras. The trans should be good for the power it was at
trans cooler

l36 block with flywheel
zzp stage 3 heads with 105 springs. I did not install the 130s since ppl where breaking timing chains
ported lower intake and supercharger
ss intercooler
CAI
northstar throttle body
85 mm MAF
electric water pump
oversized radiator
performace plug wires
tog extreme headers
xp hot cam
3/8 push rods
stock lifters
I think I deleted the egr or I just turned it off in the tune. I forget


All pumps are wired to turn on with fan switch and the pumps and fans stay on after car is off to cool i
 


buy another block, swap it all over. its what you had before so used is fine. hell you were top swapped already too.

l67/l32 are the super charged blocks.
 
Ahhh a top swap, with cam and heads. Very nice.

I would still pick up a $300 L26, tear off the heads and cam, then do it all up on that.
 
As far as a good shop, We don't have one that makes a better block than a low mileage junk yard block.

Most that rebuild don't last a year.
 


When looking for a low mileage used non supercharged engine, is their a certain year engine I should look for? One mechanic told me the 2005 and newer have better rods. Your recommendations??
 
I got an L26 from a lacrosse 2006 with 50k miles delivered for $500. I could have gone cheaper but that place was 1 mile from my house.

Yes the 2005 and newer have powdered metal rods which are considered better.

You will hear people tell you the are weak but there are a bunch of turbos guys and guys like me running them. These same guys say get L67 or L32 which have 150k and sell for over $1000.

You will have to swap your accessories.
 
When I searched on Car-parts, I did see some low mileage lacrosse engine available. What's an L67 and L32? I'm being lazy but will look up
