Full Write or Partial??

Other then the sheer amount of time difference is there any reason to NOT do a Full Write everytime I flash a tune?
 


im not 100% sure, but iirc, with DHP PT, when you partial flash, you cannot brick your pcm. whereas with a full flash, you are taking that risk of bricking your pcm if your laptop loses power, the pt box takes a dump, battery power goes to low, etc.
 
I would full write every time just to be safe. That is what I always do! Just make sure everything is charged appropriately :)
 
i set it on auto, it knows what its doing lol yeah right......writing to the same file with new updates goes much faster then reading the pcm.
 
It just seemed that on a few cars if I did a partial write the car would act completely retarded with stuff like trans settings, but with a full write everything worked fine.
 


i as well use DHP PT and never have had the issue you mentioned earlier after partials.

i would recommend that you make sure all the connections are secure on the box and port (i do not use the usb adapter, i have an older "good" laptop w/ a serial), use a battery charger/jump pack and plug in your laptop during the write if possible. make sure you are using the same modified file from the last full flash.

while i dont always use a jump pack and plug in my laptop, i try to.

since i do not know how the partial flash works entirely, i do not know if it references the change log of the file you are working on to know what to flash and not what to flash. so i try to stick to the same file and do not swap back and forth from one branch to the other...

example....

...............top swap bin option 1
stock bin<
...............top swap bin option 2

dont full flash option 1, then partial option 2.

i would only partial option 1a, 1b, 1c, etc. if i wanted to try option 2, i would full flash, then partical option 2a, 2b, 2c, etc.

are you using tiny tuner at all? i have heard that some tables are not mapped 100% correctly. i try to limit my changes to the PT software, and only going into tiny tuner to modify a table i dont have access to in the PT.
 
Yea I use tiny tuner. And I understand what your saying. It just seems that when I flash a car with a partial write, (on one car in particular) it seems to forget all learned settings in the trans and it acts full retard. No issues with the write, full power and everything works ok. Just sometimes the effects are different between the full and partial.
 
It's def interesting to see what folks post. A long term DHP user that knew Charles personally etc etc told me when using a DHP there are a few things that you always do.

Always have a spare pcm with your last good tune on it
Always do a full write.

Then I see guys like DH etc saying partial is good. Just last week or the beginning of this week.. a guy said it only took him a couple min to write. Which..anyone with a DHP know.. you'll get at least a beer per write.

Also, they said that you HAD to use the keyspan adapter...etc etc. I bought a $5 adapter on ebay that I use to this day.
If I do a few changed, it's partial. There's no reason to sit for 5+ minutes just because you changed one setting. Auto all the way on a tweak, Full when you're actually putting something completely different on the PCM. I've never bricked a PCM on DHP.
 
I really doubt it matters... I mean, we're just changing zeros to ones and ones to zeros where appropriate, correct?

Seems redundant to re-write the same data to memory. Just takes more time and more wear on the memory (although probably no endurance issues here).

If it does matter, like these partial write phantoms, sounds more like a flaw in the software/hardware doing the changes.
 
i do partials, can always recover, DHP/TINY/UVscan.

faster to do a partial and reset adaptives

where ive flashed a 96-03 down to nearly 10v the 04+ ****ing hate anything less than 11.5...98/99 bins ftw, **** all the Eobd2 crap for 00+
 
using HP tuners
My 07 can with 05 PCM can only be flashed at slow speed. But I do partial flash only
Always partial flash for my other GTPs 97-2000 and 2000. Never had a problem. High speed for all these ones.
 


What im curious about is do people actually have issues with having to remove there radio fuse when flashing? Ive been doing it just for sake of comfort because i hear you can brick the pcm without doing so on the 04 +.

You have an HPT correct? DHP is a much older critter. The issue appears to be that the data lines on the 04+ are much more congested, therefore by removing the fuse you disable a few things from talking. Years back Monte guys were putting in a switch and totally bypassing the rest of the car while writing. They'd run a dedicated line with switch to go straight to the pcm only.

so 04+ doesnt have issues with hpt? Cus i remember back at jasons when you set my egr and cat to no report you didnt remove the fuse but then again thats not really a big adjustment. I just dont want to get stuck somewhere without a pcm but it does get rather anoying removing the fuse everytime and not listening to music while scanning just cause its easier to leave it out.
