buddies car won't start.

Hey guys. My buddy called me yesturday cause he had a massive coolant leak. He is clueless when it comes to cars. Than he called me back right after that and he said it wouldn't start. So here i am. Battery is good. I have fuel at the rail. Fuel Pump works. So I think it's the starter. I go by the front bumper and have him turn it. Nothing. No click. It has power. I put his starter on my car and my car starts. I can hear the relay in glove box when I turn his key.

Side note. His car doesn't show what gear it is in on the dash. and the key gets stuck in the ignition. The wires that go to the shifter are fine.

Thanks for any input.

Take a look through this..

You don't mention year etc..but I think based on what you are saying, the switch that tells the car what gear it's in has puked. Which would keep the solenoid from getting power to engage the starter.

If he has an external black box like your car.. then that link shows you how to line up the dot that you almost can't see. If he has an internal one on a newer year, that link shows you how to put an external one on to bypass the internal.

You can also test it by touching a screwdriver from teh battery terminal on the starter to the soleniod terminal. The big wires and the small on this diagram. Be careful that your metal of the screw driver only touches these two items and ...expect a little spark to jump.

Big wires are power, small one is solenoid trigger

I should have mentioned that the guy he bought it from turned it from a gt into a gtp. The body is a 97 and he's not sure what year the engine is.

Doesn't matter.. touch those two posts on the starter at the same time with the screwdriver.. while the key is in the on position

If it starts and runs.. it's the switch I'm suggesting.

I know which one is the power. But there are 2 other terminals. One has a ground wire the runs somewhere and the other one is a tiny wire that goes straight to the starter. Which one of those to do I touch to the power?

And I don't know if I said this yet. But you are a genius!

I had a similar issue with my car once. I shifted it into Neutral and it started right up. Never had a problem after that

There are only two places wires from off the starter get hooked up.

Power: battery cable plus two thicker wires, orange and black
Soleniod: Small 8mm nut with a purple wire.

These are the two you want to touch.

If you have small ground wires hooked up to the starter.. They should not be, you have pulled a Jayroca. Two small black grounds belong on the trans stud with the battery ground.

These are the only ones from the harness that go to the starter.

Ops. I thought the small 8mm was a ground. It's hooked up right. I just thought it was something else. And I tried to start it in neutral already.

You should have seen the jokes after Hippo or whatever his name is ... blamed wet leaves for him crashing on a residential street doing around 65mph.
