99 GP 3100 engine noise

Just got this 99 guy told me it needed a fuel pump (it did),started it up,thought the tick tick was the familiar piston slap I've heard on so many 3.1's.But as the engine warmed up the noise didn't go away.I can make the noise stop by disconnecting the plug wire to the center plug on the front(is that #2 or #4?).Is this a rod knock or could the valve train, say a collapsed lifter be causing this?

Did you ever figure this out?
Gave the car to my daughter as is,she`s been driving it as is for the last 2 years, even some long trips (6 hours).Noise never gets worse, engine has good power.Embarrassing when you start it in a parking lot full of people, but she doesn`t seem to mind.

I think bearing because when you removed the combustion force from that cylinder , the knock went away
when the oil warms up and you build pressure the knock goes away

so I suspect rod bearing

So this is basically my car also except the noise only occurs under load. So if at idle and I rev the engine the. Nothing. Driving under load and I give it gas I get.the noise.

Any ideas? I would like to fix it.

Sounds like a valve train noise..a.rod knock is usually a lower sounding thump...that sounds like a lifter or valve...did you pull the valve covers and inspect and run the engine?
