"Unsure whether this has been discussed before or not (it was a complete surprise to me), so I thought I would share.

So this winter finally finished off the mufflers on my wife's '06, going from "That's starting to get a little louder", to "Oh My God! That's giving me a headache", seemingly overnight.

So one night last week I put her car up on my hoist, cut them off & replaced them with a pair of Dynomax SuperTurbo's I had in the shed (really like them on her car.....pretty much as quiet as stock). After the job was finished up I had a look inside the OE mufflers that I had cut off.

Over the course of the 7 years we've had the car I've looked at the muffler sizing & thought dual 1 7/8" in & dual 2 !/4 outs would be PLENTY for the power the car made.....I was not expecting to find the 1.3" I.D.tubes that are actually concealed inside the mufflers!

Doing some math we know the area of a circle is 3.14 X radius squared.

So .65 * .65 * 3.14 = 1.33 square inches
1.33 square inches * 2 mufflers equals a total area of 2.66 square inches.

That area is slightly less than the area of a 1 7/8" I.D. pipe ( 2.76 square inches) !!!

Not surprisingly, replacing these has killed off the 4 deg. of KR I would always see at full throttle, while still being pretty much as quiet as it was stock."
