power steering pump



well then this job is not for you then, cause you have to take the pulley off the old pump and put it on the new one. you buy/rent a gm power steering pulley puller.
 
i have taken off pulleys before just really didnt want to for this. i read online that if you take off the alternator that you could access this with a deep well socket. is this not true?
 
I think what Scottydogs is saying, is that a replacement pump does not come with a pulley. You are expected to swap the pulley from the old pump, to the new one. So unless you want to buy a new pulley too, you have to pull the old one off. As for removal of the pump, I think it's just two bolts. I would plan to remove the alternator and coolant overflow tank to make room.
 
to start with, take the pass side tire off, support the car, then with a small pail in hand remove the 2 lines off the lump, all the fluid will drain one either hose is removed. so get ready for it to drain.

then remove your coolant tank if its on the strut tower, alt removal is not needed, but can help you see better. i also unbolted my fuse box and hung it up out of the way for more room.

remove the belts.

then theres a hole in the p/s pulley, use a 13 mm and a 3 inch extension and a ratchet, theres 2 bolts, 12 and 6 o clock, remove them both, the pump will come out the top. you may have to unbolt the dog bones and pull the engine forward if it wont come out.

then use that gm p/s pulley puller, and remove the pumps pulley, and then back onto the new pump. reverse directions for install.

fill new pump with fluid and fire it up. no bleeding is needed if you keep the lines up so they dont drain on you and let air in them.

hard part is getting the new pump bolted back on, put your socket and the bolt in its hole then line it up to the bolt hole, this is where taking the alt off helps to see better.
 


I always do it from the top. I find it easier than through the wheel well. Altbough at Scott's size.. from the top may not be possible...lol
 
Before I change this is just want to be sure that's what it is. I put fluid in it and it turns fine but makes kind of a squealing type noise. Then the fluids ate gone in about 10 to 15 miles if that. Is that usually a pump out could it be a broken line?
 
Better get underneath the car and try to pin point where it's leaking from..it may be a leak in the line and not necessarily the pump
 
if it keeps loosing fluid find the leak first. if you got car ramps drive up them then look around the rack boots where the inner tie rods connect. if the boots are wet the rack is bad.

if thats all dry follow the 2 lines from the rack to the pump for wetness or leaks. then theres the pump can also leak rare tho.
 


I thought my rack was bad but I ended up just changing the pump and its been fine now for 6months
