I know that there is the problem with the mileage... the BCM holds the mileage as does the DIC. If you just switch, you (probably) won't have them match anymore. So, here's my idea which I need some confirmation on.

If I were to get a second wiring harness from a wrecked 04+ could I splice the two connectors together in the dash and then plug both of the units in and increas mileage on both DICs? I'm pretty sure that the 05 uses the Class II data bus. Is that just a digital signal? As in, it doesn't use any voltage spikes that splicing 2 in would diminish right?

If I were to just get some Cat 5 networking cable and splice together 2 plugs and hide the original computer "guts" in behind the dash then I could have all the functionality of the 5 button but then if/when I need to take it somewhere that they would care about the miles, I can just swap the guts back and forth so the display shows the correct miles again?
 


That sounds doable, i think, but would want to see the wiring diagrams for each to be sure of that. the class II data is a common bus signal, so it really wouldnt matter if you added another 'leg' to the circuit.
 
I would use a lil thicker wire than cat5 it is a lil' smaller than our stock wiring. But all in all it sounds very doable, like Toasty said.

how many wires are on the harness for the DIC that you are going to splice? i'm assuming more than 4. if there were only 4, you might be able to stick with the CAT5, but use 2 wires per (since there are 4 pair in the CAT5)
 
ehh, 18 guage primary wire is only like 4 bux at best buy, or pretty much any place that sells car audio, for a pack of 5 colors with 5 foot each, so that is just what I would get. That might be easiest for me though, since I strip the ends off of primary wire about 5 million times a day ad splice it.

I almost never use clip on splices or vampire splices as they are known, in fact there is debate that those actually hurt your wiring. I use bellcaps at work, because it is mandatory, on everything except alarm/remote starts, but they do work fine; I personally like to use the same way backinblack uses, been using that forever w/o any problems.

I solder the splice then tape it up, and backinblack reccomends that on his site, but just incase you dont see that I thought I would tell you.

To answer your question I would do it in branches.

do you have access to the wiring diagrams/connector views for your car?


if you can get the connector part numbers, we can look and see if you can get the mating connector so you can make a Y harness that is plug and play, no splicing.
 
that would be awesome. I do have access to some wiring diagrams. When I get home on Friday, I'll look them up unless someone else out there has them available sooner for me ;)
 
if you can email me those when you get back that would be awesome, I can pull wiring diagrams and colors and what they do, just not connector part numbers.
 


well, I've got some good news, and some bad news.

good news is, that yes both DIC's use the same plug. also good news is that there is a mating connector available from delphi that fits the plug in the dash, so theoretically a Y harness can be made. Now comes the bad news... the mating (male) connector is only available in header form (i.e. for mount on a pcb board) so while that is not ideal, it can be done with that-- either get a small piece of pcb board and mount the header on that (after drilling the appropriate ammount of holes in the board for the solder pins. or, i suppose you could solder the wires directly to the pins, without mouning on a pcb. (either way, you'd want to cover the connections with something before shoving it in the dash... like cover it with liquid electrical tape, or epoxy) i think i'd end up doing it that way.

if you want me to list out the part numbers for the connectors and pins i'd be happy to, just let me know.
 
alright, tyro... i did find a work around solution for the male plug needed that is not a header/surface mount, it just adds a few bucks to the project, but it's manageable. I'll put together what you'll need and post it up.

here's the deal
I couldnt find a distributor for the 12 way male plug that is needed to make the wire harness. however, this 12 way plug is the EXACT plug that is used in the 03-06 gm full size trucks for their secondary audio plug (also, i think it's in the same place on the 04+ gp's but i dont have one to see that) anywhoo, soundgate makes a $20 adapter that has the male plug we need, plus one of the female ends, it's put together for adding a cell phone, but we're gonna hack it up! (we will just leave the wires/connectors in the male end and butt splice or solder, and replace the pins/connectors in the female end)

need the following:

soundgate GMCELL (or GMCELLV2, have to look on ebay) somewhere $20-$30
one of the following:
12064799 (second female connector)
12064823 (connector pin retainer)
12064822 (connector pin retainer 2)
---cost for these is $1.98
need 14 of these, more if you need spares :) 12089649 (female terminals)
---cost for these is $2.24

--terminals and other plug are sourced from mouser electronics (mouser.com)

after adding this up, figuring 25 for the harness to cut up, and about 4.25 for the other parts, and maybe 5-7 for shipping? should put the mod under 40 bucks (assuming you may have the wire you need to put it together)

if you did end up doing it the harder way, using the header mount, you'd likely cut out almost 25 bucks. so it'd be down in the $15 dollar range, just a bit more work.

Wow... you are my hero sir. Thanks for doing all that research. I'm going to look at doing it with the connector you mentioned and hack it up. I've got TONS of wire around as I just rewired my entire boat this past summer. Thanks again. I think once I get to doing this, I'll make a detailed photo how-to and post it up. This will be super handy for the 04+ crowd without the 5 button.
 
What is the difference between the GMCELL and GMCELLV2? I see the V2 has an extra connector and looks like maybe something to do with onstar? It doesn't seem like that part matters much anyhow just wondering.
