HELP!!!! Strut towers rusting!

So my rear strut towers, the body metal is rusted and cracking. The metal plate the strut top mounts to is fine its just the body metal around it. Can it be fixed? Is it worth fixing? Can't really afford a new car since I just got laid off.

Does anyone make a repair kit for this or does it need to be custom made? I know they have a strut tower repair kits for like dodge caravans when the towers rust out but i havent been able to find anything for the grand prixs. im doubting they do esp. for the rear but i figured you guys would know better then i would.

Pictures??

Normally you have to cut out metal and weld in new patches, because they don't make repair "kits" for us.

I wire wheeled and hammered out most of the rust on mine this past spring and made small metal patches and did a crappy job at welding them in, but it works. I also coated everything with POR15 and then undercoated and seam sealed the piss out everything to slow down the rest.

I have a video I took today and ill try to get it posted up tomorrow. But its just around the plate the strut top mounts to. But thank you I seen a video on youtube that they did just that. What is that POR15?

Did you ever get this fixed? I'm in the same boat as you, and would like to hear your results. Thanks!

Ahhh...the never-ending strut tower rot. My dad and I repaired mine...it's not that difficult if you have the ability to weld. First, remove the rear strut. Then, drill out all the spot welds for the strut plate in the wheel well (wear safety glasses.) Once this is out, you will be left with just the upper wheel well area. Cut out the offending metal. Make a template of the plate you drilled the spot welds out of so that all the holes line up like factory (I marked mine for direction.) Convert this template to 1/16" plate steel. Weld in created plate. Weld or bolt the strut plate back in. Epoxy prime or self etch prime the area and apply seam sealer to the exposed seams. Undercoat the area when the seam sealer dries. Reinstall strut. Locate rear wheel well liners from 01-03 GP and install as these will help protect the area. Enjoy non rusted strut towers.

look up posts by me and see pictures of my problem. I treated it with POR both top and bottom and then sprayed rubber undercoating in the wheel well. Of course mine were just starting. so if yours is alot worse then you may have to do the welding thing..

hey sven im trying to do the same project I bought 220v Lincoln 180 mig do you think I could have just used a 110v welder I was thinking the metal I would need to would would atleast be 1/8ths thick
