Rearview mirror displays "ICE"... Never happend before

On my drive home today I noticed my rearview mirror display (onstar) reset. The screen became very bright with the whole display lit up then came back to normal. Shorty after that it began displaying "ICE" then would go back to the temp.

So for 5 seconds it will display the outside temp, then for another 5 seconds it will switch over and display "ICE"

I turned off the car and started it again, and it still displayed this. Kinda weird, but I have never seen this before... Im thinking that its warning me that there may be ice on the road, but I felt like asking here.

This is what it looks like:

Mine has done that before and I believe it does so when it gets to or below freezing and was some attempt to warn you that the roads may be icy.

I watched it once and Im not sure what it queues off of, if it slowly drops to below freezing, it seems to take it a while to pop up the ICE. But if it rapidly drops, it seems to display it immediately, so who knows. I think it would have been better to accompany it with some audible cue as well.

From what I have herd they are dropping the coverage for our cars and yes you do have to pay for it. It might still work if you are in a crash, but you would probably get charged big bucks afterwards.

^^I have No idea where any of that came up,

It says at any temp below 36ish degrees, it will only flash a few times when the car is started, most don't even notice it...

OnStar, Onstar is subscription based, unless you pay for it they don't watch you,

BUT The onstar system uses Cellular phone systems to communicate, and all GM cars up to 04(no sure the exact year, may be 03) use an analog cell signal, no carriers us this anymore, so you need to get an Onstar hardware update to use the service after January 08(May have been 07).... So if you have a before 04 gm and didn't get your hardware updated, your onstar doesn't work, and can't work :th_thumbsup-wink:

I have the same mirror in my '01 Suburban and it displayed "ICE" like that since new. It only alternates "ICE" and temp for a few mins after start up then reverts to constant temp.

The scoop on OnStar is that any vehicle prior to 2003 was built with analog cell hardware. The FCC let the carriers discontinue analog service in Feb of 2008, so everything is 100% digital. I fought with both GM and OnStar, and they are standing by their position that analog hardware is NOT upgradeable, but they offered me a free 1-yr subscription if I bought a new car...

Now vehicles 2003 through 2004/2005 (depending on model) were built with "digital capable" cell hardware, and CAN be upgraded by the dealer. The '05's and up were built with digital hardware.

As far as usefullness, I liked it back in '01 and had a subscription up until they cut it off this year. It was a great hands-free phone before Bluetooth became common, also the concierge service was helpful before handheld GPS systems were so inexpensive. Now I can do all that and more on my BlackBerry, so it's really redundant. I did use it once for roadside service and that was handy.

Glad I found all this info on OnStar! I've been looking for an excuse to ditch that antenna! And as far as I know ICE displays when the temp hits 32 degrees or below. Lucky me it's been saying ICE for close to 2 months now. YAY IOWA!!! :th_angry2:
