5 speed swap into a 97-03 gtp

The people over at ClubGP don't seem to realize there is a big difference between a Getrag 282 and 284. It appears they don't think a 284 is reliable, either, but I can't post there to refute it.

5 spd swap problems

Your 583 whp tells the story loud and clear, IMO

I am looking into doing this sometime around May. I'm not a mechanic, but I have a good mechanical aptitude. I'm sure I can tackle this, except for the welding stuff but I'll find someone to do that part.

From what I've read so far, getrags routinely handle HP in the range of modded 3800s. Fiero guys put SBC V8s on them for Petes sake! Its the case thats the weak link so long as you have a good clutch. Compared to swapping in an F40, the 282/284 seems like a bolt-on job. Just ask Fiero guys, or even kuntzie. They can handle it just fine, but like any car part, if you beat the ever-living-crap out of it its gonna break.

The auto trans is the only, I mean only, thing that I didn't like when I bought my car. I had a '90 sunbird 5-speed(282) that I loved to drive even tho it was like 100Hp at most.

EDIT: So I got an answer on this 282/284 thing. The 282 has been known to break at 330WHP. The 284 seems to handle much more, Kuntzie has been able to throw nearly 600HP at his 284.

2 drivers side axles for a 1991-1996 Grand Prix/ or 95-97 monte- lumina would work fine too, so you only need to buy one axle

I found this thread while searching for what is involved to the 5 speed swap as I have a potential buyer for the 284 trans and all of the donor parts I have for sale. Only thing is I can't yet post a new thread since I just joined this forum (I guess I need to reply to some posts first?) If anyone is interested, I'll post a new FS thread when I can.

That's what I figured, thanks for the heads up! Any idea how many I need? Apologies for hijacking this thread...I'll keep it to these few posts.

a 5-speed poantic g6 gtp tranny should bolt up, there will have to be some fabercateing but it will be the best tranny to go with for manual.

yahh id like to bet on that! my ****ing buddy did it kn his 01 gtp it took him probly about 40hrs in labor fr start to finsih

if anyone on here knows how to do it and would be willing to do it let me know and i will ship my car to you

Yeah...there are a few sort of how to threads out there on Google if you do a little searching.

But no one just does this as a service, at last count there was maybe 15-20 GP's I know of that were Manual swapped and only about 3 still on the road. If you want reliable this isn't the way to go.
