Power steering Oddity... Has this ever happened to you?



Weird the only time I ever saw any issues with these lines was an accident repair where the core support was pushed back and must not have been moved far enough so the engine sat backwards another inch or so enough to mess with the PS and Swaybar.

Mine were burnt pretty bad to be honest.... My car managed to dump 16 ounces of fluid in about a minute.
And it's a PAIN IN THE BUTT! But me and my friend were stubborn and didnt drop the subframe for space. We Spent about an hour just trying to get the thread started into the rack side just because there is that little space... and then another hour just tightening them into the rack... A crows foot 18mm helped A LOT. But a normal wrench here and there would have made it faster.

Btw... I got my new ones for 8 bucks each at a junkyard. They work perfectly fine. And the car i pulled it from was easy because it was a 97 GTP with no motor( so plenty of space lol)

I think i have bad motor mounts(motor might be sagging back) combined with aftermarket exhaust =no bueno.


Side question....

Would overfilling reservoir cause the pump to whine...?
It a brand new pump... Only 15 days old... But its whining like a little girl.

i dont think there should be any fluid in that tube, it only pops into the boots, the dust boots should be dry, if they are leaking from the boot area, the seals are bad, and the rack should be changed sooner or later.

when my first used rack was dropped off, i sent it back due to wet boots, did not want to take that chance of doing it 2 times. its a crap job to do.
 
Hmmm there was no fluid in the actual tube... just around it I may just clarify.

I already can tell it would be a crap job... Im trying my best to avoid it by hoping my rack is still fairly ok.

Do you happen to know if to much/overfilled power steering fluid would make the pump whine?
 
over filled, wont whine. bad pump will whine a lot, till it stops whining, then it dont work no more.

maybe you got a oil leak and its dripped on the boots? wet boots are never a good sign, so check that out.
 


This new pump whines more than old one ever did -___-.

And i think its oil from a possible oil pan leak... so you mostly are correct as usual. The problems never end with this car lately.
 
some of these pumps whine, some dont.

crazy but people complain about duralast pumps, i got one 2 years ago, its dead silent. even dry steering at a idle, ( dry steering is turning the wheels when not moving) not a peep out of it. and it turns like butter.

when my rack and pump went bad, the pump started to whine like mad, then it stop whining, and i had no more power steering, so i changed the pump. and had no power still, changed the rack, and its all like new now.

icing on the cake was, my old rack didnt even leak, it just quit working.
 
Mine leaks pretty good,the way I park my car I got to turn it sharp all the way to the right to pull out of my drive way,there is a black looking stream from were I park and back up and pull out which is prolly 20 ft or less,with my case when I put full pressure on it,it pours more,I'm changing all my mounts before I put another one on,the thing is people were some how driving it like yours with basically none in it
 
I heard the best way to get air out if the system is to put it in jacks stands and crank it and turn it sharp both ways a few times and it will get the air out,idk if its true
 
lol once i knew my rack was bad i drove it for 2 weeks with no power, ( waiting for the used one to come in) you'll build some muscles for sure.

if yours is leaking, its time to change it. the job sucks, but is doable.
 


I got a new pump on it,the resivoior was cracked,we thought that was the problem,got it all together and put fluid in and within a few minutes it was gone
 
well like i said, if you see fluid leaking out of the boots, the rack is dead.

someone posted about replacing the seals. but i dont think he got to far. most just change the rack.

Phew what a relief! mine is slowly starting to whine less and less. Still got a bit when dry steering. Im hoping driving it around will slowly get rid of the air in the system( Thats what everyone keeps telling me... That the system still has air in it after changing the lines.)

Side note...
Aside from a little whine... My Power Steering system is working great. Steering is lighter than ever before.But i have a feeling my rack isn't in the greatest shape plus the whine is REALLY bothering me.
 


Ok today I crunk my car after sitting for a week,popped the hood and it's smoking,near the egr valve,it's never smoked before,could my power steering be squirting up there and burning since my whole is almost near it?
