What type of freon is in a 2001 Grand Prix

Hi Everyone,

OK.... I've tried to comb through all the posts for A/C issues. There are way too many to find the answer I am looking for. So, I figured just ask!

What freon is in a 2001 Grand Prix?

Ithink it is R-12. AND, from what I remember in school and from Techs in thefield is that the R-134a and R-12 do not mix. If your system originally has R-12,and you want to recharge it, you need to have the old freon recovered (It'sillegal to empty into the air) and have it converted with the seals andfittings for the R-134a. Is this correct information for my year GP?

The A/C in my 2001 was a really good, cold blowing A/C up till the end of lastsummer. I think it needs a recharge... I wanted to do it myself, like I havefor other cars (they were newer and had the R-134a listed under the hood), butI don't see the info under the hood for my GP.

I would hate to ruin it by using the wrong refrigerant in the system, turning a$25 recharge into a $1000 replacement.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

TJ

The same refrigerant that has been used for the past 30 years in all domestic and imported cars. The labels under the hood clearly state 134-A. Unless you have the proper coolant recovery and evacuation machine, don't even try doing this yourself.

R134a has only been made mandatory since 1994. That's not anywhere close to 30 years
