04 gtp cylinder #3 missfire

I have an 04 gtp and #3 cyl is missing ALOT, they have it narrowed down 2 injector, or burnt valve. My dad has been a mechanic all his life and says if you can hear it missing out the exhaust its def a valve. Wondering if anyone knows about this, also if anyone knows how to fix this as cheap as possible, but still want it done right. I live in Greenville WI. So if anyone knows somebody or a place that can do this cheap but GOOD Please let me know. Or if its possible that its somethin else. ( i plan on tearing the whole top end down and new valves and whatever else needs to be done port and polish, stuff like that.) Please let me know. THANKS!!

Well what have you done to try and fix it?

Have you done new plugs?

Have you switched coils to see if the misfire follows, did you do the same for the injector?



And

Of course you can hear a misfire out the exhaust, but that doesnt always mean its a valve. Like where else can the noise go???

you cant pin point a misfire by just saying its a injector or valve all the time, thats just silly.

when was your last tune up? have you checked the plug thats in cylinder 3 and checked it for damage? being #3 is in a heat sandwich, pistons do chip smash the plug, then misfire.



bad icm, bad coil, bad wires to the icm, or crank and cam sensors, spark pug wire burnt/melted to the manifold. so many things to check.

you can swap plugs around, coils, plug wires, or the injector to see if the misfire moves to help narrow it down.

Like i said before though they have narrowed it down to either the injector or the valve. Its been hooked up to the computer and everyhting has been checked except the injector and the valves. I had a total tune up done a month ago wires, plugs, injector cleaning, everything that can be changed or cleaned was done.

Ya but if you hear it directly the way it is heard out of this one its very clear to me even after him exlaining it that its prob a valve, you can hear it blowing right by. I am taking it back in on mon. for them 2 figure out. Just hoping that its a little more simple than the valve.
 
04 gtp #3 cyl missfire!!!!!!

I have an 04 gtp I had a tune up done on it recently, and now noticed it poping and missing when at idol. I took it in and computer shows a bad missfire on #3 almost all the way across the chart at idol, they checked the coil, and said it didnt look rusty or ne thing so that should be good? Is that the way you check them? Also They didnt really check the plug or ne thing, but they think its either the injector, or a burnt valve, i had injectors cleaned w i did the tune up about a month ago. Just wondering if there is anything else that this could be or that i can tell them to do before they tell me they gotta tear my engine down for no reason. I have been stickin alot in this thing all of a sudden after i took it there to do my tune up!!!! Any help and suggestions would be great i have a hard time trusting the service places now days. I never had an issue w this thing until i took it in to have the tune up, now as soon as i get it back it needs to go in for somethin else.. THANKS!!

How about idle.

Check the plugs and wires. Probably needs them. Then get back at us.

so the misfire came along, and then you did the tune up, or the tune up was done a while ago, and now its got the misfire?

did the misfire come after beating on it? does it make the cel flash when you floor it now? flashing cel happens for 2 reasons, clogged cat, or bad misfire.

if cyl 3 plug came out smashed when you did the tune up, the piston is chipped.

compression test been done yet?

you said everything as been done so far leads to a valve or injector, do tell us the whole story, chain of events, it helps us figure it out better. what has been done so far?

Swap the injectors and/or coils around and see if the misfire follows them or if it stays on #3. If it stays on #3, thenI'd have the piston inspected ala a borescope or do a leakdown/compression test.

Are you using 91+ octane in it? Is it modded?

not sure if it was missing before the tune up or not just noticed it shortly after the tune up. No engine light comes on at all, no dont really beat on it at all. not sure on the plug, i took it in for something else and they told me about the missfire and showed me on the computer. they pulled the wire off of the coil looked at the coil and said it wasnt rusty so its fine, and checked to see that the wire was tight on the plug, and said that was good. I know that this isnt a good or real way of checking ne of this, which is why im takin it somewhere else nxt mon. The place i just talked to said that in the 3.8's thats very rare to have a bad valve. The thing is its just hard to find a good honest garage now days, and i have stuck almost 2,000 in this thing the last 2 months and am gettin sick of it.. But this other place now said they are gonna do what you guys have all told me to check and do, so hopefully they are honest about it. But ne more ideas or things i can make sure they do check i would love to hear about.. THANKS!!

Ya takin it in on the 20th to have it all checked over takin it somewhere else this time, thats the last thing they are gonna do. Hopefully it doesnt go that far!!

It needs premium or higher.

you can for free i may add. swap the coil packs around, the plug, and the wire, swap the injector, with the one next to it. do each thing one by one. the idea is to make the misfire move, if it does, the last thing you changed is the problem.

these coils can also crack, and not be seen so easy. and the icm's go bad, sometimes they test good, and they are bad. icm is what the coils bolt onto. icm = ignition control module.

all this can be done with a 25 dollar socket set from home depot or lowes. then keep it in the trunk so you have a few tools with you at all times. every car or truck ive owned i carry some tools with me, even the new trucks i had.

this is my 3rd gtp and never ran high octane gas and never had this prob. Got my fingers crossed not engine prob. Its 1,400 just for labor on the tear down, plus parts gonna have em dp the whole top end both heads right away, but i can get a refurbished engine for 2,000 or one with 50,000 on it for 1,500. What ya thinkof that?

you need to run 91 or higher octane, or boom goes the pistons. even stock. read the owners manual.

if the piston is chipped, get a used engine for around 500, put it in. its what most here will do. rebuilding is costly due to machine shop work it will need.

most garages will charge in the $500 range to swap a engine.

look for a cheaper engine then 1500 for a 50,000 mile engine, its not gold, lol and thats over paying. 800 to a grand would be fair.

you also do not have to use a 04 and up engine, you can put a older year engine in the car as well.
