Cleaning engine bay



All I do is cover the coil pack, air filter, and alternator with a plastic bag. Then take simple green and spray it everywhere. Let is sit for like a minute and then take a brush of some sort and just quickly brush over everything to agitate all the dirt and then spray down the engine with water. I wouldn't suggest using a pressure washer but I have heard of people doing that before. Also I wait for everything to completely dry before starting the car
 
Pfft covering anything, guess what happens when it rains or you go through a deep puddle at a good speed, oh right everything gets covered in water.

Soap it down, scrub what you want and spray away. Either wait for it to dry or just start it up and go for a drive.
 


Psssshh, unplug the battery. Soak everything with a spray can of degreaser, let set for a while, then wash with a hose. Let dry for a few hours.
 
Heck I drive my car 1 minute to car wash. Cover my air filter, then just put some orange stuff on it use a tooth brush in tight spots where dirt gets, theyln spray from a couple feet away with the car wash. I don't cover anything else
 
I will say this, if you have an aftermarket intake, don't spray that directly because there is no air box to cover it, but that should be common knowledge.
 
lol i use a pressure washer on the bottom and watch out for the frezze plugs but the block is what im after if i cant get the back of the block i will pull the engine out just to clean it. A little nuts but its worth it. It gives me the chance to also clean the tranny too. its nice seening all the clean parts under the hood.
 


I read from another thread on the forum is to use tire dressing on plastic parts. I did it to mine and its all clean and shiny

give it 2 weeks, then go look at it again, it will look like crap, i did that one time, looks good, but every last speck of dirt sticks to it fast, looks worse then a dirty engine in a month.

i learned my lesson with tire shine on the engine bay, wont happen twice.

if you have a stock air filter, you can hose the whole engine down, you need to cover nothing at all.

if you have a cone filter, take it off, get a bag and a rubber band to cover the TB opening, thats all you need to cover.

still looks good a week later. We will see how it looks in another couple weeks.
 
A large, stiff paintbrush is probably more useful than a toothbrush.
Tire shine is great and lasts months. The trick is wiping it completely dry after spraying it. The most useful spots for it are the heater hoses, since they look all dry and crusty after a degreasing.
I've heard there is some merit to using Pledge cleaner to repel dust in the engine bay, but I've yet to try it.
