• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Maintenance gone wrong - wires/plugs - NOT RUNNING

last time i did plugs/wires. car would start, then die right away,

silly me i knocked the vac line off going to the brake booster

edit, also ive recently been playing with vacuum on my car, looking at gauges/scantool, and ive unpluged the map on the car and it still idled fairly well...

The nipple has completely snapped off - it appears that it was a stress fracture and this is the last "jolt" it needed. The nipple is still in the vac line. Does everyone agree that this would cause an extremely rough idle?

I'm hoping this is it - but if not, I can solve this problem at the same time...at least it may run BETTER and I can really figure out what the deal is.

I have checked the firing order over and over. All connections secure.
I hate to say it, but check a couple more times.
When it starts, it start strong and about a second after, sounds like death. Roughest idle - surging - running rich - gets close to dying then sputters back to life...
this sounds like it could be a ripped injector wire or an unplugged/broken/dirty MAF sensor to me. A little vacuum leak shouldn't cause that bad of an idle.
Is copper a problem? Everyone here says they're the best to run.
Who's this "everyone" you talked to? :p
Try removing that grease.
good suggestion.
Perhaps I will drop the gap a bit to see if that works
Your gap is fine, don't worry about it.

A good thing to do at this point is to pull every plug and see which one is wet with fuel. That will at least give you a good spot to start.

Thanks for the suggestions, Gentlemen, each was helpful. I'm going to tackle all this tomorrow after work - yeah, i get to sleep on it and then think about it for none hours then do it - always fun. Keep the ideas coming and I'll be sure to respond when all is figured out.

that is 100% your problem you are going to have to replace your map sensor. Get one new if you cant one from the junkyard will work fine just take the peice that broke off inside out and hookup the new maf and your problem will be fixed

Wish my yards were open later here. I called LKQ and they had nothing. AdvancedA couldn't get it to me until the 12th. NAPA it is - for a hundred. And it'll be in today. Sigh...

Could the MAP sensor been jared?? With it above the #2 and arms down behind it pulling and jerking it could have gotten hit and the vacuum unplugged?? Just a thought..

Thanks to all of you, especially dbextreme for narrowing down the problem exactly.

Got the new MAP installed and after figuring out that the other MAP is used for a baro-sensor, the car started, choked for a second, then fired right up into an excellent idle. Everything seems back to normal, but I'm of course worried that I damaged something in the process. Idle seems great, car heats up, no funny smells - I think we're good to go.

Thanks again, guys.

You can knock the hell out of it at idle for a few minutes with no ill effects. Pretty tough engine. Sleep sound.

Thanks, Slow. Drove the car to work this morning - all seems great and I feel better knowing what I know now. Knowledge is always power.

Relax and enjoy it..

These motors take a serious pounding in many ways. I drove abotu 10 miles with every light and bell screaming at me on a Series I motor. Come to find out..the low coolant light was correct..lol Fixed, never another issue

Had an air bubble from hell on my S2 another time.. stalled at idle from heat. Got that burped..no issues ever again

Often I cross a couple plug wires.. no worries.. fix them and it's all good

You likely didn't hurt a thing.

Thanks, Bill. After this experience, I'm confident to do more stuff. I'm almost 30 and it's taken me this long to figure out "if I break it, I can fix it".

It also amazes me that with these engines (and every other motor) being soley reliant on technology to run, one small hiccup can cause a world of "WTF is going on"? :th_laugh-lol2:
