ZZP XPZ Build

New member
Im gonna be doing an install before i head to ZZP so i dont have to pay an outrageous 1000 dollars for labor install. I have an XP cam, ZZP CNC Ported Heads with 105 springs, ZZP 7.05 pushrods, OE-R 875 lifters, Pacesetters, 42.5 injectors, 3.0 S/C pulley, 85mm MAF, fuel pump re-wire and Rollmaster Double Roller Timing Chain all on its way and am just wondering some things before i tear into it.

Should i get rockers?
What kind of rockers should i get?
Do i need to put new cam bearings in?
What problems will i run into?

All help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

******Updated******

Decided to scrap the whole deal with ZZP and went with the INTENSE. I am now doing the Intense Stage 4 Heads and Cam pckage. Cometic .52/ 3.84" bore Head Gaskets, INTENSE 7.05" Oil Restricted Pushrods, JP Double Roller, 42.5 lb. Injectors Meziere Electric Water Pump, 3.0 pulley, OE-R 875, Pacesetters.

Re: Cam, Heads, Etc. Install

first off: sell those OE-Rs and then just buy some ls7 lifters for way cheaper and they wont be loud like the OE-Rs will be.

second: do you have a bigger pulley than a 3.0 to use while youre figuring out your basic tune? youre going to need one.

third: have you read about the 105s having a problem with breaking?

dont get rockers, the stock ones work fine. you shouldnt need new bearings so long as your car runs well and you always took care of the oil. if you havent bought head studs do it now, youll need them for when you have to take your motor apart when you break something. they also last forever, unlike the stock TTY head bolts. do you know that the rollmasters need a little bit of work on them and/or the oil pump cover so they dont break from rubbing on anything or running on an angle? do you have a GIANT breaker bar or a *****in impact for the crank bolt? youll need that too.

just a few thoughts there, might have missed something.

Re: Cam, Heads, Etc. Install

where could i go to get head studs? and for the double roller, i forgot to mention that i have a new machined oil pump cover so is doesnt rub. No i didnt know about the 105's having problems breaking. Where could i pick up some new Ls7 lifters? They actually fit? How are the OE-R's so loud? And as for the pulley, i do havea larger one. its a 3.4. that should be good enough right? And the crank bolt will be easy. We've had to take the balancer and everything off before to replace the crankshaft positioning sensor.

Re: Cam, Heads, Etc. Install

you can get head studs from ZZP, thats where i got mine. make sure the double roller fits on the crank correctly. if the crank gear is out of tolerance the chain will break at some point.

you can get ls7 lifters at the dealership and they are the new factory replacement that you would get from a dealership if you were getting work done. the OE-Rs are just loud and youll always think you have a lot of valvetrain noise for really no reason.

a 3.4 should be good to start, but i was just thinking a 3.0 might be a bit small to be running on a cam only car with no intercooler.

Re: Cam, Heads, Etc. Install

The OE-R's appear to have a design flaw where they come apart. Gonneville a member on other forums posted recently that this is a common issue. Stock lifters would be fine, LS7's are the current stock replacement.

Cam bearings. To do this IIRC you have to pull the crank. Say no to pulling the crank unless you are having a machine shop redo your motor.

Head studs are great. Torque spec is 90 ft lbs. Don't forget the teflon or PIpe sealant goop. (GM or permatex).

Rockers, go stock until you decide to go bigger on rockers.

Springs, the 105's currently on the market will all be Crowe Cam. Stay away from the Mexican production Comp Cam springs. Those are the ones that were breaking. Depending if you went further than 1.6 with rockers, you will need different springs. Say an S1X and 1.8 rockers...that's 130# time.

Head gaskets, use copper rtv spray on both sides.
LIM bolts, timing cover bolts, and the head studs get the Pipe Sealant.goop.

Re: Cam, Heads, Etc. Install

Well after alot of reading last night i completely cancelled my order from ZZP and went to INTENSE and ordered there Stage 4 Heads and Cam package. So even better id say. What do u guys think?

Re: Cam, Heads, Etc. Install

Oh and by the way Bio, i do have an intercooler lol. Stage 2 Fullsize IC

Re: Cam, Heads, Etc. Install

ya for real huh? I havent heard anything bad really about intense so i feel it was a good choice as well. i feel the heads will be way better than ZZP CNC heads. Im paying just a little over 800 bucks more than the ZZP order for actual "stage" heads. thats damn good. and the cam looks way gnarly too.

Re: Cam, Heads, Etc. Install

Just to clear some things up, the LS7 lifters that everyone refers to are the same lifters that GM has been putting into their engines since 1996. So be sure you're not paying extra just because they say LS7 on them. In the world of GM, lifters are lifters whether it's for the L32 or the 5.7.

I recently got a set of IS3 heads myself, and I was pretty impressed with them. I did opt to swap the 130lb springs for the 105's just because my cam doesn't have a big lift, it's barely over what the XP is, so I can still use the stock timing chain/damper. I'm still not a big fan of the double rollers out just because of my own personal experience with it.

Don't think that I can say anything else that hasn't been said already.

Re: Cam, Heads, Etc. Install

Reptile, if u dont mind me asking, what experiences did u have when u using the double roller causing u to shun away from it?

Re: Cam, Heads, Etc. Install

brian, you didnt break one did you?

i had good luck with my JP double roller. i ran it on my car for around 25k miles, but i never looked at it once i put it on. it could have potentially been a problem given that they have been known to stretch and break, but since i never looked at it im not sure how it turned out. hopefully the guy who bought my car doesnt break the chain.

You don't remember this fiasco?

So yeah, I'll never run one again. If I were to get a crazy setup that required to run anything like 130# springs, then I'd obviously have to consider one....but I don't really plan on it in the near future at all.

Re: Cam, Heads, Etc. Install

if you drop the cradle for the cam install, do you just put jack stands on the side of the car?? couldent put it up front any where could you???

Re: Cam, Heads, Etc. Install

you dont even do that. you dont lower the cradle enough to take the bolts all the way out. it only needs to come down like an inch or two.

Re: Cam, Heads, Etc. Install

ahh okay. but if your jack stands are under the cradle its not coming down right so i guess you find something else to put it under.

Re: Cam, Heads, Etc. Install

So just out of curiousity with the stage 4 setup ill be running, What things should be done to the tranny?

Reptile-When that happened with your double roller, was yours for an L36 and not for the L67?

Re: Cam, Heads, Etc. Install

a lot. youre going to demolish your transmission in no time on a stage 4 setup. which cam did you buy? IS3 or IS4?

Re: Cam, Heads, Etc. Install

the IS4 lol. Thats what Todd told me at Intense on the phone. haha. It just gives me a good reason to rebuild the tranny next
