I am 16 years old and i just got a 97 grand prix gtp and i know a little about mods to the exterior and to the engine. I am interested in "bang for your buck" type of mods. If you could help me with some ideas to do, it would be great.
 


intake would be my first. So cheap to buy/fab. :)
smaller supercharger pulley thingie
camshaft
porting
etc. ^^

The key to starting modding, is; Where go you want to end up/ what is the goal.... otherwise you end up modding the same thing more than once, and read around this forum, there is loads of info waiting to be read
 
Make a HAI for now. You'll get mixed reviews about this but it's cheap and easily sold if you decide to go a different route. This was my first intake.

I have a used 9" K&N filter for sale and the only other parts you need is an elbow and rubber coupler from Lowes/Home Depot.

I'll make and sell you the whole thing for $40 shipped, and it will be ready to install.

ya after doing some research, i am currently thinking about an cold air intake and some different pulleys. I am interested in buying the one for sale, but i have also read that the wizair intakes are much better at blocking out heat. But what size of pulleys would i need? I want to make my car faster and sound better, but not too much cuz i am a student and money is a priority, and since i drive it everyday i dont want to lose mpg's.

Don't do a pulley swap with no mods, unless you like replacing engines anyway. A pulley swap problably shouldn't be on your to do list for a long time. You need extensive intake/exhaust/cooling/tunings mods to be safe.
 
I have learned that pullies are something that are a ways down the road. Right when I got my car I figured that a pulley would be and easy upgrade that would give me lots of power but I have found out that you need to do quite a bit for a pulley. Start off with a CAI and a new PCM. I have the Wizaired CAI and a ZZP PCM. I am getting a ZZP DP in the next couple days and that should free up some power.

I know how you feel about being a student and all. I will be a freshman in college this fall and I also drive my car everyday.
 
Just take your time modding...dont buy something cheap that "might" work. Horsepower = money! Always remember that you have the GPF community to ask any questions you may have about anything, and will give the best answer based on their knowledge.
 
if you have a dremel... you can port your exhaust manifolds...this will give you better flow..mostly through the front.

Free mods, Intake, 3" DP, PCM tune, then I would do a 3.4.
 


Here's the BEST advice I can give you right now:

SAVE YOUR MONEY.

You will NEVER recoup modding costs when you sell your car. As far as I can see, this economy is headed straight down the sh!tter faster than a Mexican burrito, and you'll wish to God that you hadn't spent your hard-earned paychecks modding your car. Trust me. Been there, done that.

What's the fun in saving your money?:th_question1: A little extra money here and there to do something you enjoy is harmless... An intake, exhaust, pcm, and a pulley is around $600 if your good at shopping around and would make a healthy mid to high 13 second car.... And actually if he wanted to sell the stuff there's always a w-body guy out there interested... No, he wouldn't get what he paid for it...well in most cases... but he would get something out of it plus he got to enjoy it.... Oh and btw... Those mods should go in that order...
