Would you pay over book for a nice GTP

Been looking for a 98-03 GTP sedan with close to 100k or less to replace my 97 SE 3800 looking off and on for years for a low mileage specimen. Everytime I find a nice one its too much for a bank loan to cover because of NADA book value and the dealer/seller won't budge enough on price. Assuming you have the cash and found a very nice 100k mile car how much would you spend over NADA KBB book price or would you refuse to pay over at all?

I wouldn't pay over book value. Financial institutions will loan as much as they can so they can make more money, and if the dealership or whoever is charging more than the book value, then they are way too greedy.

I have the dealer talked down to $300 over book still working on lowering the price. They have come down 1200 so far. The tough part is the car is 8 hours away and I haven't seen one this clean any closer in a long time.

Cargurus.com or where? That's about the only place I've seen them over book.

Edit: No, to paying over retail.

Autotrader, there are a few nation wide over book. There is an 02 with 14k miles for $10k private seller in Texas.

Yes I have been watching KSL. A few weeks ago I took a trip to salt lake and spent the day looking at about 10 2004-07 GPs. There were a few with around 80k on them and they all had signs of body work, rust, previous accidents, poor care or all of the above. I got the impression that that generation of cars from GM are not the best in quality.

I talked to my local dealer parts guy and he said if they get something in on trade that it sells quick. The last one they had, did not make it to detailing before it sold. I have not seen anything worth looking at on KSL in awhile. There was a 60k mile 03 that was from California and if I recall correctly they wanted like 8k and wouldn't go down to book value. This was about 5 years ago.

I picked up a nice 2008 Grand Prix GXP last December, love the car. It seems to be a bit easier to find a nice GXP than the other Grand Prix's out there, but it does have a V8.

I got mine for 9k, right at the book value, and added a 3k warranty. Like I said earlier, I really like the GXP. I also have a 2001 GTP that has heads and a cam and the 2001 is faster, but I bet the GXP isn't much slower.

04-08 are way better quality than 97-03.

How nice are we talking here, perfect paint and interior, no dash lights and no rust? Yeah, I would pay over book.

I have seen hundreds of cars bring retail book+ at auctions if they are "nice". Paint body, options, cleanliness actually do matter.

I agree with stealthee 04-08 are better quality than 97-03. I owned a 98 gtp before my 07 I got now. Yeah the 98 was supercharged that was fun of course but also had the rust uncomfortable seats etc. When I got my 07 four years ago it had was really clean and only had 60k on it and no rust of course and had all the options I wanted. And has been a great car. But I feel you on a clean low mileage 97-03 gtp no rust they are nice and only 300 over book. I would jump on it because living in the rust belt myself I know how hard they are to find. One thing I would definitely do is switch out the seats from 04-08 I think anyone that has done it would agree a lot better.

Paid over book for 05 Comp G. But it had no rust, all maintenance records, 85k mileage, fresh tires and I knew the previous owner

You could keep an eye on the craigslist section here, if you don't already.

There's many proud owners with ads that show up. Bout to post one over there now, lol.

I am just outside of Pocatello to the south.

I bought the car for $100 over KBB. I think its worth it. The previous owner took really good care of the car. The dealer installed all new brake pads and a new power steering pump. Carfax showed it was a 15k mile lease and 2nd owner had it until 106k. I looked at it in the rain it looked good real good. I towed it home on a car dolly 500 miles 1 way. I washed it today and noticed that I missed a bunch of light scratches, a couple door dings and that the driver seat cracks only when sat in on the side. I am cool with it because I haven't seen a cleaner one in the last 5 years. Everything works and its redfire metallic.

Personally I like the look of the 97-03 better but hate the headlights effectiveness and that there are no passenger heated seats. The dealership I bought it from put it up on a lift in the shop and let me inspect the underside. Its real clean. I found a tie rod slightly loose and tried to talk them down more and failed. Decided it was worth the price. It drives nice and has no rattles. Even had the original window sticker and inserts with the owners manual and extra key/fob. It has one headlight with moisture in it. Taillights lenses better than most. 3 missing lug nut covers. Some off color over spray on the rear bumper no positive signs of repaint or body work, hoping the over spray comes off and that maybe it was just a garage crafty accident or something.

I think I might buy some classy retrofit lights and will be selling my 97. Hmm how do I change my user name...?
