Worthwhile Mods

Well I'm planning on maybe doing a top swap to my 99 gp gt but currently I don't have the money for it. Would there be any other worthwhile mods for a standard L36 that wont break the bank? I know CAI's are cheap as you can make your own but do those help that much? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

if you plan on top-swapping your supporting mods should go like this:

-scanner (example: aeroforce)
-headers or plog and 3" d/p (your n/a setup will make your car feel like a turd with headers or 3" d.p)
-make your own intake
-hptuners
-tranny cooler for when you have your s/c on (my tranny gets really hot really quick with the new found boost)
-Intense or trans-go shift kit, fresh filter and synthetic trans fluid such as amsoil (pan drop)

How fast do you want to go?

Ok thank you. I'm not lookin to have anything thats amazing I just want to get a little more power for around town dragging I guess. If I'm gonna be racing its gonna be like stoplight to stoplight kinda stuff. I just want some more power outta my car.

And about the headers, are you saying I should upgrade the headers or dp after I do the topswap?

Edit: oh and I'm looking at the intakes right now (again) and it seems to me that the fwi is the best way to go. What is you guys' opinion?

Amke your own or don't make on at all IMO...all the vendor intakes are junk minus TDC Racing's here...

Ok so looking at the fwi air intake system, how does it differ from the stock airfilter box? Obviously it uses a cone filter rather than the stock one but here does the factory air intake get the air from versus where the fwi gets the air from? And how will this be any better than just adding a k&n filter that would fit the original filter I have? Also, will I need to do a retune after doing this mod? Thanks much to everyone.

No tune...stock air boxes suck...it gets colder air and flows better than stock which means more power. That's it. And it makes a cool sucking sound :p

Ok thanks alot bluegtp. Sorry I don't really know as much as everyone else, I'm kinda new to all this haha I'm learning though and I appreciate you guys helping.

Anyway, my dad was explaining that if it would suck more air in, then it would run to "lean" causing there to be more air than gas in the engine, so this was why I was wondering about have to do a retune. So if I understand this right, the fwi doesn't take MORE air in, it just takes BETTER air in and flows better. Thanks again and I appreciate not treating me like crap cause I'm a noob haha.

No, it does take in more air...hence the more air; denser, cooler charge = more power. And yes it does flow better too...

Go read the thread Safely Modding Your 3800 Powered Car that I wrote. It is sticky'd in the General Tech Section at the top. That should be more than enough to help you out and understand things. You won't have to re-tune for just a intake...put it on and drive it around, or unplug the battery and install it and then plug it in when your done. It just has to re-learn the fuel trims and such and can do it all on its own.

Ok I understand now, thanks for explaining it more thoroughly. I've read the thread you've mentioned (which is great btw) but I'll go read it again because there are still some concepts that I need to learn.

^^ this how you appreciate advice.. :th_thumbsup-wink: good luck bud you'll find alot of helpful people and information here

I'm looking at the powerlog and downpipe upgrades cause I want to know what I need to do to get my car ready if I want to do a topswap later on down the road.

My question is, should I go with the 3" d.p. or a 2.5"? I know bluegtp said in the 3800 modding thread that its better to go with a 3" if you're sc or if you plan on topswapping. But will it be bad to run a 3" on an L36? Or should I go with the 2.5"? I want to do the topswap but I'm honestly not sure when I'll get around to it so either way I'm in a pickle haha. Have the 3" for future proof (if I top swap) or have a 2.5" and be safe, but then have to run a 2.5" with the sc. Ahhh so confusing haha.

I got a 2.5" on my blown L36 with no KR, your car will feel like a turd with a 3" and no boost, but 3" is better for s/c and headers are best imo

You should just get a good set of headers and put them on when your doing the top-swap.

Yeah ok thats kinda what I just thought of. If I do decide to do a top swap, I'll just get some headers while I'm at it and upgrade it a little bit more. Oh and when you say "blown" L36, what exactly does that mean?

ok thats what I was thinking. I thought it referred to either the sc or something to do with the air intake. I have to learn all these terms so I know exactly what people are talking about. Someone should get all the abbreviations together and make a sticky with the definitions of all of them haha. I think that'd be a good idea. I'm sure it'd help some people.

yeah it took me a while to learn all the stuff also haha i believe there is a thread somewhere with the abbreviations actually... i just cant remember if its on this forum or not... if i find it ill be sure to post it for ya
