Worth buying and flipping?

A buddy and I just got one to flip. $1500 with 121K on it. Same color and more base that that one. Supposedly bad engine and needs tires. Engine was low on coolant, we did LIM's and are putting tires on it. Quick cleaning and it'll list for $4k

I'd try and snag that for $1500-1700, clean it.. fix the leaking coolant elbow and list sell for $4K, take 3500

Yea i'm hoping it would be something simple. Even if it was a headgasket issue, it shouldn't be a problem as long as there are no other surprises but hopefully that's not the case. Scotty said watch it be a stuck tstat. $10 and done deal. Haha.

You'd like to think. Expect Murphy's law and anything that goes better is a bonus. I've seen perfectly good cars sit for months, even with aggressive pricing.

Haha. Don't tell me that! You're probably right though. Who knows, i'm gonna go check it out today hopefully.

Some of the car's I've flipped would amaze you.

My buddy who I flip with absolutely hated this one car when I bought it.
99 Passat 2.8 with 227K on the clock. Body is reasonable, no rust, started, ran and drove. Needed $5 in o ring gaskets and a flex pipe. Sven suggested doing it. Got for $500. Just to prove to him it was reasonable...I had it sold for $100 profit w/o doing anything to it within 3 days.

Meanwhile.. a great car might sit longer.

Haha. Well hey $100 is $100. You're right though, they can sit longer but i'm hoping that won't be the case. I've always wanted to flip cars but never had the b@!!s to do it. But a good deal like this is probably pretty hard to come by wouldn't you think?

Do your research..

Start browsing CL daily at cars say under $1500
Then browse those same cars and years without the dollar limit
You'll find the good cars to fix up, especially if the parts are priced right.

Once you have a few weeks/months of learning.. you should have been saving some money. That would be a good time to jump on a car.

A head gasket is very unlikely.

So on that passat.. after he did the orings.. the cam tensioner took a crap. Actually one of the pads for it. Buddy spent the $150 to get the parts and now.. it's fighting the two of us like a seriously large pimple on the left butt cheek. Worked on it for close to 5 hours last night.

This is the problem with trying to flip.. once in a while.. something is going to kick your butt.

That sucks dude. I actually think im going to back off of the deal. I don't have the cash and I was looking at the market around this area for the GP and there are newer models with lesser miles going for pretty cheap with nothing wrong with them and they have been sitting for at least a couple of weeks, maybe a month or so. I really don't want to sit on it for that long. Guess i'll just wait til I actually have money to play around with before I get into that.
