• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Wondering if anyone else has had this issue

About a week ago I was driving to work and the DIC told me to "check gas cap" so I did and it seemed ok. I went to Autozone and the chick there said I had a bad gas cap. I went to the local dealer and bought one for about $21 and went back to her to have my computer reset. Well two days later the DIC said the same thing. I took it back to that Autozone and talked to a different guy this time and he said that she shouldnt have said that because thats the biggest misconception when it comes to that error. Well luckily when I went to the dealer by my work and talked to the service manager he noticed I worked for a certain company he has service with. LOL we were able to work out a deal and he brought out a tech and a TECH 2 computer. After poking around under the rear of the car they determined that it was a "vent valve". I guess it releases vapors to the engine or so they do not go to the engine. So basically what I am getting to is wondering if anyone else has had this part go bad because he said that they go bad all the time. And if anyone out there has had this go bad is it easy to fix or should I just work out a deal with them? Any help would be very much appreciated. Forgot to mention its a 2006 GXP

i have had the same problem with my 2001 bonneville i have put 2 gas caps on it after the check engine light came on and they said it was the gas cap so maybe i can fix mine the same way

I'm truly not trying to be sarcastic, but how in the hell can you have a bad gas cap? If it's not crushed into 1000 pieces it's a good gas cap right?

Sounds like the DIC needs to generate a different "code" for this problem.

^ lol! no, sorry but caps do go bad, the gasket looses pressure just like weatherstripping does over time, causing there to be less pressure inside the tank and in the fuel system which is harmful to emissions and can throw a code

Well the exact part is called a Vent Solenoid.... Anyone know where I can buy one??? Auto parts stores around me dont have it. Could this mean its dealer only?

This all has to do with the evaporative emissions systems. Basically, OEMs are responsible for not only tailpipe emissions but all emissions (see PCV system) (this includes emissions from the plastics used (new car smell)). Pretty much anything that turns on the check engine light has to do with emissions. The evap system vents pressurized fumes from the gas tank into the engine to get burned instead of venting them into the atmosphere.

My wife's Century has that code set because the filler neck is rusted and leaks under pressure. It's a PITA to replace the neck and doesn't really hurt the engine, so I keep putting off replacing it.

Its a problem that has affect some people. Technically it should be warrentyed outside your 3yr 36000 mile. Since emmisons control devices are warrenty'ed longer than that.

that you for that advice panther.... I bought my car off a used lot so how do i know if its still under warranty? Or does this fall under the AS IS NO WARRANTY part of the sticker lol

falls under the as is part lol shouldnt be bad to replace
Id check out rock auto.com they have a ton of emmisions related parts
