wires and coils

I'm asking this because I've seen different opinions in different threads.
I'm currently in need of new wires. some people say stock are better, others say if you're looking into modding you'll eventually need bigger wires. but if you get bigger wires you need coils.

I've read on another thread somewhere that aftermarket coils are lower quality and have less voltage output. So it seems stock coils are the way to go (which contradicts what the first guy said).

are the 10.3mm wires simply for looks? same as the msd coils?

Is my best bet going for stock wires and getting new stock coils?

could anyone shed some light on the topic please?

Well, I’m bored so I guess I’ll throw out my two cents. Keeping in mind this topic has been killed, then beat to death, then killed again on this forum.

IMHO as long as your wires, coils and spark plugs are in good repair and solidly connected your car will run great. The choice in wires and coils is basically just for appearance, granted the thicker wires should be more durable. The GM ignition system (waste spark) is so strong through the entire RPM range that the choice of coil and wires makes no real difference. Older forms of HEI tended to drop off at higher RPMs, and imo that is were gains were sometimes very noticeable with coils/wires of “better” design. What does require a better ignition is running high boost levels, and then a real upgrade like a MSD DIS-4 (or similar ignition) might be in order. But for the average guy running reasonable boost levels by simply reducing spark plug gap (on a stock ignition system) a tad is all most people need to do as a "mod".

I don’t think your ever going to find any kind consensus in this area. It is like asking people what intake, what tire, or what oil is better. You’ll get a hundred opinions if people feel like gabbing about it.:th_yawning:
