Why do my brakes sound so bad when I stop fast?

Okay, when i am going 20mph and slam on the brakes the car stops very fast. But..........the sound the abs makes is violent and very simalar to the sound of metal crunching. The car also jerked very hard which i would expect but not in the manner that it did. WHY?????? it sounds so bad that the wife tought we hit the car in front of us. thats what it sounded like. I have an 04 GT .

abs makes that noise when you nail the brakes hard, the pedal pulsates under your foot and gets spongy and hits the floor, the jerking is the the wheels trying not to lock up, some times you can feel each tire lock up for a split second and then unlock then lock up the next wheel for a second and so on.

if you were on dry level ground you must have been REAL HARD ON THE PEDAL. most of the time the abs will grind real loud when you are on dirt, gravel, rain slicked roads or snow, as traction is greatly reduced and the abs gos full strength.

if they feel right/good while driving normally i wouldn't worry about it to much.
