Whining noise all the time

Hello,

I have searched and searched and have not found a problem similar to mine on here.

I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix. 3.1 L v6 Engine (Not Supercharged). New Plugs, Wires, transmission fluid/filter, Oil Filter and fluid, Fuel Filter changed all within the past three months. Car has over 165,000 miles on it.
Now two weeks ago we started to get a slight whine coming from the engine when first started and would go away after about 5 minutes of driving. Now the whine is constant but more noticable when turning. The P/S fluid is full and have not discovered any leaks from it at this point in time. However I am sure that it has to deal with the power steering because the car is getting harder to turn when sitting still and harder to turn when driving it. Fluid stays constant, however has a kind of yellowish film at the top of the fluid.
Do not know if anyone will be able to help me or not but it is worth a try. Also the ABS light has began to kick on after about 5 minutes of the car running regardless if its in drive or at idle. Also the Traction control light has come on and will not shut off when button is pressed on the dash board.
If anyone could help me out i would greatly appreciate it. My thoughts is the power steering pump is going out on it however i am not sure and want to be sure before i spend money on a part that i did not need when it was something else.

Again thank you in advance for any help you could give me at this point in time..

Update:

I dug around in the P/S reservoir and found a spring in it.
I have been told that the spring could have came off of the cap which could cause air to get into the lines and make the power steering system whine. Is that true? I learned that from a guy at Napa.
Also when i turn the pulley on the pump itself the fluid in the reservoir is gurgling.
Is there any way i can remove a line or something and see if i turn the pulley if there is any fluid coming out with out the fluid gushing out?

Again thanks in advance for any help you could give me.

id start with a new power steering pump and see if that fixes it. if not your rack and pinion is shot.

if you take either line off the pump all the fluid will drain from it, about a quarts worth. but thats not going to tell you anything.

when you change the pump you will also need a pulley puller to remover your pumps pulley and then install it on the new pump. you can get the free tool rental (you leave a deposit, they refund you fully when you return the tool) from almost any parts store, very easy to do.
