Which Mod to do First

I have a friend on cardomain and this is a qustion he had:

I HAVE A GPGT AND I WANT TO PUT A S’CHARGER ON IT.MY QUESTION IS WOULD IT EFFECT THE INSTALLATION OF THE S’CHARGER IF I DECIDE TO DO OTHER ENGINE MODS BEFORE THE S/C?

If anybody can help me help him, I will greatly appreciate it. I thought doing the S/C first would be better, that way any future mods done would be to support the S/C. Instead of doing mods then the S/C and having to change the whole setup. I am going to try and get him on here, so that every one can talk with him directly. Until then I will relay any advice. Thanks everyone.

Make sure he understands he can't just throw a supercharger on, it costs anywhere from $400-$900 to do the conversion. Then figure out how much he wants to spend at first after he does the conversion. CAI, exhaust...

You can do either first in my mind. But if you choose to do some minor mods before the supercharger, you need to keep in mind your long term goals. Don't go buying an intake spacer, put on a 2.5" downpipe, or ER rockers that won't work with the supercharger. Just mod smart and you should be fine.

I'm the friend of BADAZGTP from cardomain.com who this question refers to.I want to do some restorations to the motor too, should I do this before the S'charger?

im not quite sure but pretty much wouldent that just be hoses and gaskets??? and since you are putting a s/c on there mine as well do all the gaskets. and just clean things out. but im no expert. but with out pulling a motor apart i would think that is restoreing.

if it doesent have to many miles on it i would think it would be fine, but then again mine as well fresh it up while your building on it. i guess it all depends on how well you want it done. but like i said i really dont know, im just chiming in untill someone more experinced does :)

i got 85k on it and im tryin to get some power out of this car and im plannin on keepin it for a while too.:th_skull:

i meant rering, valve jobs, and bearings and stuff.

Better be upgrading those parts inside too. The L36 motor has weaker rods and pistons than the L67 so it'll be more prone to failure if you don't tune it right. I'm top swapping mine but I also accept the fact it may fail down the road, then I'll swap in a L32 short block.

yea i heard about that.i was thinkin bout swappin out the engine, sound like i might come out cheaper that way.what do you all think, since i dont do my own work?

You might as well just swap out to the L67 (factory s/ced) and avoid a whole lotta headache... you can find one for pretty cheap with low miles at most junkyards.... typically you can find a decent one for $600 or so for motor and tranny.

where can you get both that cheap? When I was looking recently the engines alone were about $800 for one that wasn't burnt (local and national checking)

Top swap removes everything from the top end of the L67 and puts it on the L36. Parts required are heads, LIM, SC, TB, fuel rail, harmonic balancer, and all the little odds and ends like vac lines and idler pulleys etc. You pretty much rebuild the top of the motor.

If you're not doing it yourself, do not go this route. A lot of labor. You shouldn't mod the car too much anyway unless you know what you're doing and not go trusting someone else. You need to know what's going on in there.

I prefer the swap since I'll be rebuilding the heads and it's a lot easier to do that on your desk than when they're on the engine. Plus they'll be completely cleaned (dipped) at a machine shop so it'll be like having a brand new engine. In its stock form, the 3800 bottom end doesn't wear very much so I don't have to worry about rebuilding it. Something happens, get a new one. Plus, I already know the history of this one so I prefer to work with it.

yea i might just do a few mods to it nothing much.i just put the wizaired cai on,and plannin on a slp powerflo exhaust system and zzp 1.0 pcm.should i stop there cuz i at least wanted to add the hv tb and hv3 insert.i just want my car to be able to hang with most and without harmin too.

Those mods are fine for the L36. You don't really need to worry about it until you put some forced induction on. Just scan it once in a while to make sure it's not running lean or knocking.

Someone with a scanner. Or you could buy a Interceptor gauge or something similar. I don't know of many shops who can scan and know what they're doing with this engine.
