What years of 3800 will work in an '01?

I'm trying to find a cheap 3800 series 2 to swing in my brothers GT. It developed a pretty good rod knock a week ago and he needs something soon. But I'm not sure what year of engines are compatible with his car. Are any series 2 ok as long as we swap all his electronics and hardware over to the donor? And does anyone in the central IN area have a line on a cheap running motor we can look into?

L36 aka S2 NA motors are becoming harder to find. You can use a newer motor. Typically they are much cheaper and lower miles.

Look for an 05-08 GP motor NA and you'll likely find many more. Then you swap the intake and poof..it's good.

You can get one from pull a part in Indianapolis for 250 with the core charge. There's no guarantee it'll run tho. but they have 40+ series 2 powered cars in there on average. Get one from a regal with low miles and hope it was driven by an old person. Lol

Well thats good to know. So as far as the long block goes, the difference between the series 2 & 3 was intake design? That'll make the search a whole lot easier.

I have a l26 block in my 97 bonneville. For all intent and purpose all you need to do is change the upper intake. It has some different rods and pistons.
