What happens if you disconnect the Magna Steer?

Re: Looking for a different Rack & Pinion

I'm bringing this back again for new people. Looking for a rack with quicker response to inputs; let me know if it exist!! Thanks

Re: Looking for a different Rack & Pinion

SyntheticShield yes you got the idea if you have a electrical connector by the transmission shift cable area and it goes into the steering box you have mag stearing. It takes more force to turn the wheel as the speed is increased by using a electrical magnetic clutch (not the right name for it but you get the idea)

Re: Looking for a different Rack & Pinion

Seems to me that you could disconnect that connector and tape it up and run without it if you really wanted that higher ratio rack. I'll admit, when I first got my car I was used to driving trucks and the steering at highway speeds was so sensitive I found it difficult to not weave. But, now I drive with nothing but slight flicks of the wrist.

To put it short, you'd notice your lack of "Magnasteer" along with the quicker ratio and find it very sensitive at first. But, you'll get used to it and really enjoy the quicker feel of the car.

Where is this plug located and do you get any kind of check engine lights or anything?

I think my plug is disconnected right now..

I swapped my 97 harness out for a 98 and just discovered the other 2 missing wires from the connector i spliced in are for the magnasteer clip.

So.. i am going to wire them up in the next day or so.

I have a code I cannot get ride of

DTC P1665 Driver 3 Line 5
DTC P1676 Driver 4 Line 6

Nice helpful codes, lol... i think one is evap and the other is the steering.
Alsthough some places I see one of the codes as "Trans Axle Range Switch Performance" or something like that..

I'll let you know what i find when i connect this

If you look on the RPO sticker in your trunk the Magnasteer option is NV7. I have a 97 that has the Magnasteering option and a 98 without it. I can't tell much difference between the two myself.

I did look into adding Magnasteer to my 98 and it is not realistic because it is tied into the ABS/Traction module which is also different not to mention the harness is different too.

I would like to know if the Impala rack would work!

have a quick question had to replace the engine on my 04 gp gt.....and ended up replacing the rack to.......got it all back together.....and forgot to plug in the connector off the rack....now after everything is in place cant locate when it plugs into at.....any ideas where to look

Look at the harness that comes over the top of the transmission. Near the linkage. Should be down in that area assuming GM didn't move it on the 04's, as this is where it is on my 00 GT.

Hate to say it but I had a 98 GT with variable assist AKA Magna steer and currently an 01 SE with the standard R&P steering and by far, prefer the SE steering which has a more direct feel than the magna steer. The variable assist steering has a tendency to "numb" the steering feel of the regular rack. Also, a W body is a w-body and an impale steering rack will fit in the GP with no mods. The 97-03 GP, Impala, Intrigue, Mont Carlo etc are all basically the same car with slightly different engines and springs and shocks-interchangeable.
