What are the long brackets above the battery and intake for?

There are two long, identical brackets on either side of the engine bay. One above the battery, one above the intake box. What are these for? Okay to remove for clutter/weight savings?
 


Good point. I would think they might buckle the good up so that it doesn't go through the windshield as well possibly.. I can't decide if I should remove them..
 
Yep, leave em. Not only do they tie in the front end, but in the event of a crash they make the hood buckle upwards instead of shearing off your head.
 


They are most definitely not for hood buckling. If you look at them there is no crease or bend to make them want to buckle in any specific way. In fact I have seen multiple Wbody accidents where they buckled DOWN. The hood however has multiple design features that will cause it to bend upwards to avoid chopping at the drivers neck. They are for strength in the front end / handling purposes. Leave em alone unless you like a loose sloppy front end.
 


They are for strength and strength alone. The hood is designed to buckle and would buckle without them. If they were to make the hood buckle, then all cars would have them.
 
If you look at the bottom side of the hood youll see stamped creases, thats what makes the hood bend. And @smoke, that wasnt a direct head on. Look at the d side brace
 
Interesting.. I can see how, and I agree that they are likely not for hood buckling now. But wonder how a long thin piece of metal provides any additional structural rigidity to the front end.
