• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Well the fun begins in tuning,,

So bought used DHP tuner box! Now to get car home, laptop configured and start learning.
I have deal on a used zzp intake that will fit non S/C heads and let me run a S/C. Now looking for rest of parts. Now need balancer, tensioner, and of course finding appropriate supercharger.
Now I am still working on an alternative rod and piston combo for 3800s.
When I see $1400-$1500 for just rods and pistons, I just can't see it for my purposes.
What I was hoping for $250-$350 for rods, and similar amount for pistons that work better, like forged.
So while all the original owner/operator/modifiers of these cars started with newer cars, yet so many forget that old muscle cars didn't always get modded right out of the dealership, hence all the "rare" barnfinds. And the fact is that many of them are rode hard put away wet.
Maybe these won't be "muscle cars" like of old but some of us can't afford buying $5000-$50000 care then start modifying.
And now some of these come up in various states of disrepair or neglect.
Hence my buying a fairly clean, 04 GT2 with rod knock.
So for the people just getting started join me in the fun. If you getting out, don't be greedy.
My plan:
Learn tuning and preparing for supercharging conversion.
Planning on trans upgrade. HD or 4T80E.
Since my plans are middle of the road even a stock 80E would suffice.
Did find couple of cars, a wrecked 06 GTP, and a 04 GTP Comp G less engine.
Still need to clean it out inside, degrime some door panels.
Got few plans for stereo upgrade,
And interior fixes.
Nw on to scrounging engine parts or engine.

You can't tune a 4T80e with DHP and a stock computer, just a FYI.

Stock bottom end would handle 500+ hp, would be a waste of machine shop work and money to buy rods and pistons. Better off staying stock like said.

Well as I try to point out I am just getting started. As for stock handling 500hp, I am in planning and experiment stage. After hearing so many horror stories about rebuilds yet I have rebuilt several 231/3800/3300/GN 3.8 and had no issues.
The theory is find different short block/engine, and get it running first and for most.
I have few pieces from my Regal that fit and I also have my Olds that needs work, and other projects lacking attention. The DHP is to just get started, and allow me tuning for when I Supercharge it. Found good deal on zzp intake that allows me to use NA engine. And found wrecked GTP and one GTP Comp G minus engine! Just my dreams out strip my funds.
Trans options are countless. Time will tell.

He said he has rod knock so he needs an engine or rebuild.

I have a series 3 engine/gen V supercharger that I am deciding what to do with. (Sell or keep for spare parts???)

no point in a rebuild. just grab another replacement motor and mod it/slap on a turbo kit. in my opinion, I see no point in upgrading the bottom end as the internals from the factory are well enough to handle gobs of power/boost well above 400-500whp. I'd be more attentive in rebuilding the 4t65e trans to handle the power or if money isn't an issue, swap in a manual trans.

Grab a motor and trans off CL or junkyard. Send the trans to Dave at Triple Edge for a rebuild to handle the power level you want. No need to spend a bunch of money on the lower end when many on here demonstrate the trans is the weak link.

Budget: Run a stock GTP motor tuned. Maybe a cam, intercooled, or E85.

Expensive: Stock GT motor with turbo kit.

Fixed that for you.

Oh I have found several possibilities, a rear-ended 06 supercharged for $700 giving me lower miles engine and trans. Also found 04 GTP Comp G minus engine($1500 which I think is too high regardless of body condition) I could possible use 06 engine in. Found could other 04/05 NA engine, and made deal on zzp intake that converts NA to SC so can use NA engine in my 04 then add blower later on.
Found several years of knocking engines, and my buddy just picked up some machining tools he wants to play with, line hone, cap grinder, etc. He even had Impala SS with blower and once. He likes idea if building another for fun car with air. His drag car is fun but hard work. He also has show car but that is also work. These might be fun cars. And I am just getting back into W body's.
