Welding question

2005 GTP and I'm getting a downpipe that I need a new o2 sensor bung added for the wideband sensor. I don't have a welder, so I went to a shop to see what they would charge me to just carry the downpipe in and they do the hole and weld for me. They said $50. I can't justify buying even a small welder, because I'll probably never use it again.

Is the $50 a good deal considering I don't have to buy a welder? What have others done?

i had one installed on my tahoe on the shops lift for 35.

i say hit another muffler shop up. pipe in hand 30 is fair in my eyes. 50 is just robbery.

I told him I would walk the downpipe in. It's not even on the car yet, and he still said $50. I have the bung also. I'll try a couple more muffler shops.

Is he going to tig it? I could see it being $50 if so.

If he's going to mig it properly, you're still talking a decent amount. It requires different gas and stainless wire.

If he's just going to burn it in with mild steel, yeah $50 is too much.

I'll have to ask him in the morning. He originally quoted me $100 because he thought it was attached to the car, eventhough I initially told him I was bringing just the downpipe in. I'm still going to try a couple more muffler shops,a dn ask on price and how they plan to weld it.

Thanks. Someone at the office suggested Heritage also. They had them install a trailer hitch on their SUV. I will give them a call as well.

Also, just curious...Does the hole need to be 18mm? That's what my research has shown, but I wanted to see what others have done.

shop drilled the hole with a hole saw, tad larger then the bung, put a dead o2 in the bung then put the bung in the hole and welded it up.
