Water vapor in exhaust after LIM gasket repair

Obrigado

New member
I just completed my second LIM gasket replace on my 01 GP SE. I did it a second time because I was seeing water vapor in the exhaust (too warm outside for condensation), and thought I had cracked the replacement plastic gasket I used in the first repair.

The 2nd repair included the metal gasket set. I was shocked to find that plastic gaskets were not cracked. I replaced them with the metal gaskets any way. I finished the work about an hour ago............and am getting a ton of water vapor in my exhaust (too much to be condensation).

What the heck have I done wrong 2x now?

You may still have water/antifreeze in your exhaust if the original lim gaskets were leaking bad enuff. See what its like in a week and keep your eye on the coolant level

Thanks, but I don't think that's it. There is enough fluid/gas/vapor going through the exhaust system that it is dripping out where the tail pipe meets the muffler, along with being very visible vapor from the tail pipe.

I think I may have a stuck thermostat, even though it's only about a month old. I can't get more than about 1.5 gallons of fluid in the system.
Would a stuck thermostat cause a pressure build up in the engine that would result in a blown head gasket without the engine overheating?

I would be concerned about a warped head or blown head gasket but the temp has never been above normal that I can recall.

I almost sold this car when I found out about the LIM issue. Starting to think I should have now. :(

Hey had the same thing done today on my 95 3100. Only when Im stopped getting alot of smoke. I figure he is right. Running only water and told come back in one week to flush again.I was told I have to do this at least three times before it would be ok.Also had to replace thermostat! I will keep you posted as far as problems or whatnot. I have almost 312000 km on her so....keeping my fingers crossed!

I talked live with a GM mechanic I found on Craigslist yesterday. Based on how the engine is running smooth, with no misfires, he said that liquid most likely has pooled in the catalytic converter (he said what part of the converter, but I don't recall........collector, condensor, something with an "er" at the end), and that I just need to run the car for 30 minutes or so to get the exhaust hot enough to boil it all out.

I'm going to give that a shot today. If that fixes the problem, I'm going to have him come by tomorrow and flush/refill the cooling system. I could do this, but he was VERY helpful and informative on the phone for free, so I think it's only fair to pay him something for helping out.

PS- Sounds like Silverstreak was right. Sorry for doubting you bud. I just couldn't wrap my mind around how come so much vapor and dripping was happening due to residual moisture in the system.

Right on man. Mine is still doing it and will try what the mechanic advised you to do! All the best, take care!
