Hey guys! Just saw that someone on the monte carlo forum posted this & thought you guys would want to know about it. I will most def be covering up my VIN tomorrow

WHAT WILL the car thieves THINK OF NEXT?

The car thieves peer through the windshield of your car or vehicle,
write down the VIN # from the label on the dash, go to the local car dealership and request a duplicate key based on the VIN #.

I didn't believe this e-mail, so I called Chrysler-Dodge and pretended I had lost my keys. They told me to just bring in the VIN #, and they would cut me one on the spot, and I could order the keyless device if I wanted.

The Car Dealer's Parts Department will make a duplicate key from the VIN #, and collect payment from the thief who will return to your car.

He doesn't have to break in, do any damage to the vehicle, or draw attention to himself. All he has to do is walk up to your car, insert the key and off he goes to a local chop shop with your vehicle.

You don't believe it?

It IS that EASY.

To avoid this from happening to you, simply put some dark tape (electrical tape, duct tape or medical tape) across the VIN Number Metal Label located on the dashboard.

By law, you cannot remove the VIN, but you CAN cover it so it can't be viewed through the windshield by a car thief.

I urge you to forward this to your friends before some other car thief steals another car or truck.

pontiac dealership here in town made me bring proof of ID and some kind of proof of ownership when i requested a new key.
 
rather b blown and gtpinsc are correct. Dealers aren't suppose to cut keys without proof you own the vehicle.
 
Does everybody believe there are no dirtbags working in any dealership parts departments? You are right that they should ask for proof of ownership, but I'm sure that can be avoided if you know or pay off the right person. :(
 


meh i live in butt**** nowhere. you could have a ferrari in the driveway with the windows down and keys in it and no one would mess with it. plus im all ways near my car and everyone in town knows me and my car... im not worried.
 
A new key might unlock the car, but, If the alarm was set with the keyfob, it has to be unlocked with the keyfob or it will not start. If you unlock with the key, and try to start, it will fire but then die in 2 seconds. Can't remember wich but it's the VATS, or PASSLOCK system at work to deter theft.
Had it happen to me at the grocery store!!!!!

Yea the key needs the chip in it, even if it does have the chip in it, it won't start because the car doesn't recognize the chip. I don't think all GP's require a chip in their keys though.
 
By law you have to have the title in your name present, or the original keys in hand before they will order, or even cut the new keys at the dealers.

Even if there is some "dirt bag" working at a dealership, it has to go through management for approval to insure it is legitimate.

Your VIN is exposed, and it is safe.

I'd like to see them try and steel my car, even with the keys, you still have a home made theft deterrent I installed. My **** wont run unless I throw the switch to let it. :th_thumbsup-wink:
