VC gasket issue?

so i have a 2001 gtp with 114k on it and i noticed today that there was a slight amount of smoke comming off the front header. when i investigated a bit more, the head just above the header looks oily. so i am thinking that my valve cover gasket is shot...is that what i am looking at? and if so how hard is it to replace them? :th_scratchhead:

That appears to be the most likely culprit. I would make sure the oil cap and filler tube [not sure the technical name] are tight and also you may wann try snugging up your bolts around the valve cover. Be careful not to go too tight, breaking one of those in your block would cause a bigger problem. After checking the above clean up the area [i use break cleaner and then compressed air]. Then test drive the vehicle and see if your problem goes away. If not then it could be the gasket, or the valve cover could be cracked.

I'm not sure how frequent the latter would occur but it is plastic so i would think it is a possibility.

i will clean it tonight asnd drive it till sat. how often do the gaskets fail on the 3800's? and is it better to get the rubber of cork replacement?

Its been my experience that rubber gaskets are more durable. I have mostly worked on transmissions and the cork breaks apart more and sticks to things more making future replacement harder. Also if you over-tighten something with a cork gasket it could break easier especially if their is oil on it.

right on! well thanks for the help! and hopefully i will not have to post in this thread again! *knock on wood*
