Vapor Canister Vent Valve Solenoid Question

Drove my son's 05 GP base this weekend. When I went to put gas in it, I could only put in $0.20-$0.75 at a time and the gas pump would kick off. Went to Advance Auto and bought a new vapor canister vent valve solenoid. During install, I noticed that the old canister was filled with a grey dust and the line coming off of it was packed full of the grey dust. I cleaned it out as best I could, probably 18-24" into the line. Is there something else going on besides the vapor canister?
 


It happened to me also.. The canister shot charcoal all the way up to my engine bay.. got a new canister blew the line out and we lived lived happily ever after
