valve train noise

selliott

I break stuff
To me it sounds excessive but im not sure what "normal" would sound like. I have a intense stage 3 cam, 1.7 yella terra rockers, 7.4 pushrods, stage 4 intense heads, comp oer lifters. I took the valve covers off and spun the engine by hand and checked the pushrods and the torque on the rockers everything seemed ok. Here is a couple videos not sure how well you can hear it over the open exhaust. Im planning on checking oil pressure tomorrow just to be sure. Let me know what you think.

how long has it been running so far? when i did rockers and push rods it took like a good 10 to 15 minutes just idling till it sounded anywhere near normal.

lifters tend to take some time to pump up.

Overall it's loud. I'd almost think exhaust leak from the vid. If that noise is coming from the valvetrain ... check compression on the cylinders and look for misfires. Anything showing?

Its run around 2 or 3 minutes 4 or 5 different times

I will check compression tomorrow, I ran out of daylight today. What do you mean by anything showing?

Its also not wanting to start I actually have to give it some gas to start then rev it a bit before it will idle. This only started after I put cam position sensor interrupter on. Actually after watching the first startup video I don't think it had the valve train noise either but its hard to tell.

Ok.. so fix the vacuum leak you told us about yesterday. Fix anything that you see/notice. See where you are after that, these motors will run on 3 cylinders etc etc. To run very well, things need to be right or they'll make noises etc. That is part of what makes the 3800 such a great engine, you can do tons of stuff to it incorrectly and it'll usually accept it..wait for you to correct it and then be a happy motor again.

You did see how I ran mine w/o oil a few weeks back? Yeah.. motor is totally fine.

I'll start hunting around today and see what I can find. Good job on the no oil thing lol, glad your engine is OK tho

Checked some stuff out today, didn't get as much done as I would've liked. When its first started I throws a maf code, once it is cleared it doesn't come back till the next cold startup. Its also throwing a random cam position sensor code but that's only every once in a while. The closer it gets to running temp the worse it runs. I'll look more into it in the next couple days.

oil pressure is 62 at idle. Havent checked compression yet. Reptile is coming out tomorrow to look at it so hopefully we can get something figured out

So, here's a question. With the Comp lifters, how noisy is normal for these? They have a chatter to them that almost sounds like the lifters aren't pumped up, but they are. Oil pressure is good, with oil coming up through the pushrods like they're supposed to. I've heard that they do make noise, so the question is....how much are they supposed to make?
