UH OH I flushed the trans now i have a whine

hello. i need some help please. i have a 2000 gtp. trans fluid was bad, so i flushed the fluid, changed the filter. took about 9 quarts. maybe 9 1/2. the car drove nice when first done. i drove it easy. i ran around the house for a minute, made sure it was full. then i got on the freeway. i knew my fourth gear was stripped already one of the reasons for the flush, i knew metal was in the fluid. i get off the freeway and drove south on gratiot. mind u i was driving easy. i stopped at almost every light, got about 4 miles and i felt the trans shift out way too fast. well it tripped me out. so i prayed lol. my destination was a mile away, i stopped again at a light, took off slow, i saw the tach do sumthin which looked like a slip, also it shifted out way too fast. i got to my destination, it was pouring rain. wasnt sure if it leaked or what.i kno when it get so low i will loose a trans and this was not the case. i let it sit for about two hours, still raining. get in the car and drove all the way home. non express way. it drove fine. the next day i get in the car and of course now i have the windows down. i hear a WHINE only when in gear. reverse, and drive. in nuetral and in park the noise is gone. i checked fluids, it was fine. i checked engine codes, and oops it has a tcc stuck on code. so i figure that the tcc stuck on and the line pressure was increased due to the tcc fault. so i left the pos batt cable off for like 8 hours. hooked it back up and no change, the whine in gear only. so i been driving it and it doesnt miss a beat. so maybe i am thinking a clogged or restricted flow somewhere. if anyone has any help i would apriciate it. sorry it is long, i am just trying to explain it perfect. i even added lucas trans and altho i believe in the stuff and seen it work esp in fords......no change to mine. sometimes it seems like the noise wants to go away but trust me it is not going away. am i resetting it right with the pos batt cable off or? if there is something clogged i drove it high idle, i think it would have cleared. any way to back flush so it uncloggs? do i try to re change the filter maybe its plugged or obstructed?? im lost. it shifts fine, it even shifts smooth not hard. ever. any help? i am desperate befoe i damage this beyond repair. i already know i was tearing it down to replace the fourth gear....i rebuilt the engine like 2000 miles ago, and i didnt find one thing wrong with the engine except for high miles. i just dont like the idea of having to do both the engine and trans. but i feel this trans is still good. if u made it though this i commend u lol. thanks guys in advance. mike.

Based on my expereince, your trans is shot, mine was doing a simular thing but along with the wine in park and neutral it was accompanied by a marble in a blender sound, eventually i lost all gears and it was nuked, rebuild my friend, :(

Sorry to hear what's going on, I know how disheartening it is! Here's some info from the Triple Edge Performance website, it may help you some:
Trouble Code P0742 TCC Stuck ON:
When this trouble code is set the pcm will command max TCC and lock adaptive shifting. This code can be broken down into three potential problem areas as found to be common in the field.

1. This problem can be a mechanical problem. Possible causes of this could be a bad or stuck TCC switch that signals the pcm of current TCC operation. Another cause though not common is a stuck TCC switch or apply valve. If it is physically stuck in the wrong position it can cause the TCC to be stuck on all the time and even kill the engine when the vehicle is put into gear.

2. This problem can be found to be an electrical problem. If the wire from the TCC pressure switch to the pcm is grounded anywhere in the path it can throw this code. This could be a wire shorted inside the trans on the internal wiring harness or the actual engine wiring harness. If the wire is grounded the pcm thinks that TCC is on when it shouldnt be and will throw the code.

3. This problem can be a hydraulic problem. This is the most common cause of this code that I have found and stems back to a clogged TCC solenoid, not because it failed. Excessive debris in the transmission or a failing torque converter lockup clutch can cause the solenoid to have debris stuck inside and this causes a restriction in fluid flow through the solenoid. If the solenoid can not bleed off the pressure the TCC can be stuck on. If the wrong TCC solenoid is installed during an overhaul this problem can also arise as a late 4L60E solenoid is identical but does not operate the same and acts like a clogged solenoid. As mentioned in problem #1 a stuck TCC apply valve is a physical problem but causes a hydraulic problem because the fluid pressure will not properly bleed off because the valve is stuck in the wrong position instead of being able to move freely in the bore of the valve body.

Above are the common causes of this code, there are other possibilities but those are what generally causes the fault. A thorough diagnosis is the only way to determine what is really at fault and a new TCC solenoid should never be assumed as the actual problem until verified.
Is code P0742 the code that you got?

Did the trans make any whine noise before you changed the fluid and filter? I am guessing no based on what you said but you didnt say that it didnt make noise either. The only thing spinning when you put the shifter into any moving range such as R or D-3-2-1 is the torque converter and pump so that rules out anything else to cause a noise. If you stall the converter up will the whine get louder? Can you hear the noise driving or does it fade away? The TCC Stuck On code, P0742, is described on my Info page below in my sig and explains some of the causes. I would definately check fluid level again. How did the bottom of the pan look? Was there a lot of debris? Do you still have the old filter so you can cut it open and look inside? I can tell you from my customers experience as well as mine that P0742 is trouble and you are more than likely looking at a rebuild. The problem stems to the TCC solenoid being contaminated from debris in the trans. There is an exhaust port on the solenoid and when debris gets stuck in the solenoid it cannot exhuast the fluid well enough for TCC operation to be released or turned off, that is why the Stuck On code sets. Some guys replace the solenoid and get lucky for a while but the debris that cause the original solenoid to act up likely came from the torque converter and isnt going to go away on its own. Replacing the torque converter isnt the cure either as something internal of the trans caused the lockup clutch to wear in the first place and those problems need addressed as well and is often a combination of the valve body and channel plate inside the trans.

thanks guy for the replies. trannyman, there was no noise at all b4 i flushed the trans and changed the filter. it drove excellent for like 20 miles. i only hear the whine in gear. R, D, 1, 2, and 3. when i drive the pitch does change, and then as it shifts in 3rd i do not hear it at all, i can feel the tcc shift and there is no whine there either. if there is it is very faint. as i was driving today, i thought i heard the whine sort of toning down, but it is so hard to be sure. i tell u i kind of wish i would not have flushed it. also is there any known way of resetting the shift psi parameters? my code scanner does not go into trans info at all. also the tcc code has not came back since i reset it. and like i say the trans has shifted perfect, it just has a whine. almost sounds restrictive, but who is to say that it doesnt have max line pressure. like i say my actron scanner does not go into trans info. not even trans temp is listed. i probobly will tear open the pan again and just look around. plus i will change the filter again, maybe sumthin restricting it there. i do kno that it drove fine for about 20 miles with no whine, and no engine codes. the tcc is working fine. i dunno i am going to keep my eye out for a transmission for it, and of course i almost wanna change the 4th gear with a 2003 version, and maybe do a couple other things to it b4 i put it back in there. thanks again guys

if it goes away in 3rd, its gonna be planetary gears makin noise, on their way out unfortunately rebuild time.
