I am having major problems with trans temps. I have a large external cooler and a finned pan, but the temps are still in the 200* range. Am I going to run into any problems if I rig the puller fans to come on with the ignition?
When I was on a stock trans, I never saw over 160*, even during "spirited" driving. I did the turbo swap and the stock trans was roasted in a weekend (240* all weekend). Now that my Dynotech trans is back in the car, I don't want to fry it, so I installed a finned pan in hopes of getting more cooling.
Another thought...could my trans temp sensor be getting false readings from the downpipe being right there on top of the trans?
My aftermarket trans temp sensor is installed in the plug that is at the top of the trans. I still have the problem of my stock trans turning brand new fluid into almost black fluid in a weekend.
Yes, I have a blanket on the turbo, but the downpipe is not wrapped at all.
Like I said, the fluid wasnt the only indicator of my trans going out. I went from beating the piss out of my car for the last 50k miles and never having a trans problem to swapping fluid (turbo install) and having it completely dead in less than a week.
Pacesetter's had that issue being so close to the bell housing, IIRC I couldn't run a temp sensor up top...I'd be willing to bet that the turbo/X-over is the source of your heat issue.
As an update...I installed my giant trans cooler and the finned pan. The trans runs so much cooler now. I don't know what it was that helped more, the pan or me putting the cooler in front of the radiator.
Why not? When you run the AC both fans come on, even if youre doing 80 on the freeway.
Also.. I am completely stock. In heavy stop and go traffic my trans gets up to 206*. I saw 228 one day when it was blistering hot outside and right before my water pump was replaced. On the freeway it runs between 167 and 195 depending on weather and how long ive been driving.
