I just got this GP in the beginning of feb. Its a top swapped 99 SE with a 3.4 pulley/ 1.9 rockers/ TOGs+ 3" downpipe and catback/ zzp crap tune.

From what the PO told me, the tranny in it is original from his knowledge. He said he installed a new valve body in it back in '04. The car has 232k on the odo now :th_nervous:

Anyways, I have to admit that I've been kind of hard on it since I bought it. Today was the first time it slipped when I hit WOT while merging, and lately its been hesitating for a second to upshift.

Replace filter+ drain fluid and re-fill.

If he can do $300 I'd strongly consider it. From what I read, Centuries came with the 4t65e I haven't had a chance to check the tranny fluid yet but I'll see how that looks.

first off welcome to the community.

Now, your car seems to have a lot of potential. First off, what does the transmission fluid look like and smell like?

Secondly, not all 4t65e are created equal. The biggest problem being the trans cooler line fittings. Now that's something that can be fixed with some adapters or some new trans cooler lines, but it's something to keep in mind.

I'll check mostly likely sometime at the end of the week since there are some things that need addressing on the car anyway.

I gotcha, is there a thread/list somewhere stating which transmissions are compatible with GPs? I've been searching for a spare tranny within the tri-state area since I bought the car, I had a feeling this one would start giving out soon enough :D
 
I don't believe I know of any list out there, but Trannyman from Triple Edge would most certainly be able to answer your question.
 
A 4T65 from a Century should work. The only two things are the lines like Cop mentioned and the differential ratio. Coming from a different platform originally I notice the gear ratio (due to differential ratio) is one of the bigger differences. This can be very easy to correct, as the differential is quick and easy to swap out when the two transmissions are out of the car.
 
i took a quick look at CL and found this, there were a few more trannys up for sale in the tri state area, but all were for a n/a motor when i was looking, this one is a hd trans, and just across the GWB.

HD trans should be much better for a top swap build like you have. would need to get the pcm programmed to match the gears tho.

well its a part out, unlike morads, im sure you could get both axle's with the trans.

and i do believe i need to call this guy myself lol i love a local part out. i could use a few interior parts still.

I just bought a DHP tuner (waiting on it to come)+ dual aeroforce scan gauges so now I can see whats going on. I believe I'll need to get a stock pcm though, someone told me that the ZZP tuned ones are locked and can't be changed? (I need to see whats going on with fueling cause I'm getting 15 city/ 20 highway with regular driving- not to mention it smells rich).

Anyways, I'd prefer to stick with the 4t65e. From what I read there are only 2 small differences, one being the HD diff and I forgot the other. Also, it seems that the HD trannies seem to fail the same amount of not more from what I've seen? Another plus for the 4t65e is the 3.29 gearing, it makes driving around the city a little easier.

I floored it multiple times at different points to see if it would happen again, and it didn't slip.
 
The 4t65 HD and non HD are the 90% same parts.

The differences are:
HD output shaft
HD diff
HD diff cover (bigger to accomodate the larger diff)
Diff cover spacer and bearing.
HD has 33/37 drive/driven gears vs the non HD of 35/35
Torque converter is 258mm bolt pattern HD and 245mm non HD

These differences are very small. To upgrade a non HD to an HD, most guys swap the diff, diff cover and the spacer/bearing. The passenger axle is shorter on an HD due to the larger/longer diff.

To get 3.29's in an HD trans, you swap the drive/driven gears to 35/35. The HD diff is a 3.29 ratio. (overdriven by the 33/37 to get to 2.93)
