So why is there a leak around the spare in the trunk?

Probably rust.

if you have a lake around your spare, that means water got into your trunk, and came to rest in the well.. there are drain plugs if ya want to get it outta there.. but you need to address the leaking isuse, the seal that goes around the trunk opening is the first issue, replace it.

its easies to crawl under the car and pop it out that way, just use a flathead.. they can be a PITA to get back in sometimes.
