Transmission Problems

I am a moron when it comes to Front-End Drives: I have a 2004 Grand Prix that I love. When I put it in 1st gear to take off, it pauses for a second then jerks ahead. If I take off really slowly it will react normally. I know it has something to do with my tranny, what I don't know is It going to cost me $100.00 for minor parts or is it going to cost me $2300.00 for a rebuilt transmission? HELP!

well it could be either end of the cost picture. first off have you checked fluid level? and when is the last time you did a pan drop and filter change? If the pump is starved because of a clogged filter then a fluid and filter change may help. in the middle of the spectrum, 1st gear bang-shift could be pressure control solenoid or other solenoids. Which can be replaced without pulling the trans, the trans get dropped with the subframe and side cover comes off. worst off is your first gear metals and clutches are slipping and you need a rebuild. so start with the easy and obvious and go from there

Thank you MGUZZO for the very helpful advise, I did replace the fluid and filter last Aug. I will follow your next steps and do the solenoid check. My fingers are crossed and hope it doesn't come down to a rebuilt.
Thank You
