Transmission problem

Not sure if I need an entire transmission but not sure what's wrong with the car. It revs really high in first, about 5000 rpms and accelerates really slow like its not catching. Once 2nd hits it's smooth sailing though. Until 4th gear and I try to make a pass again it seems like its not catching? Just revs really high.

Just from your description, it sounds like it's slipping really bad.

Won't be long before it won't move at all at this rate. You could suck out a quart of fluid and dump some lucas stop slip in for 10 bucks, but it might not even help you any.

I have had a transmission leak. Could that have anything to do with it?

Yes, you need to check the fluid and fill as needed. No guarantee that it will fix what is wrong with the transmission but you need to take care of the simple stuff first and see what happens. If you end up needing a rebuild, bank on at least $1700 for a complete rebuild with a new converter. Find a good shop that knows this trans and its factory weaknesses and you should be good to go for a good while, provided you aren't constantly spinning the tires and thrashing on it.

So an update on this issue: I don't need an entire rebuild. I took the time to take out the transmission the last few weeks (pain in the ass to do with limited and borrowed tools, but it is getting done) somehow one of the transmission bands snapped and the broken piece was just sitting in my transmission pan. So I'm going to get the band to replace it and gasket set to put the beast back together.
