Transmission Overdrive Problem

I just noticed here lately, that whenever I drive, my car does not want to go into 4th gear. We were driving home yesterday, and it was cold and wet, and just for a second, we noticed that the car jumped like it had came across a black ice. Ever since, it has not gone past 3rd gear.

I was told it could be a speed sensor or the cellinoid sensor getting worse.

I flushed the tranny fluid last summer and when the car gets hot, it switches into what has been told to me is, "fail safe mode".

Any ideas?

We need your car info to help you out, what Year/Make/Model vehicle do you have? How many miles are on it? If it is an 02 or earlier than you likely have a stripped 4th clutch shaft which is very common to see. The best way to verify this is to have the car diagnosed with a scan tool and watch to see if the pcm is commanding the car to shift into 4th. If it is commanding 4th and wont physically happen it will generally not throw a trouble code. Typically any trans limp-mode type condition will go away with a key cycle and work as it should until the pcm sees a problem, but if it is a mechanical problem it will continue to exist after a key cycle such as a bad 4th clutch shaft.

It is a 2001 GP GT. 90K miles. If it is a stripped 4th clutch shaft, how difficult is that to change, hours?

I am going to a tranny shop, I will see what code it gives me.

Thanks for the info.
