Transmission issue

Hi, I just bought a 06 GP with 85,000 miles on it. The problem it has is on occasion, after being at a stop and then moving forward, it's like the transmission is in neutral for a good second before it actually goes into 1st gear, and when it does go it in slams into gear because of the higher engine RPM's. It did it once too going into reverse. It only does it occasionally, but I really don't like it. I changed the fluid and filter (the old fluid was brownish red) but it didn't help. There were a couple small metal shavings in the pan, but didn't seem abnormal. I have yet to cut the old filter apart to see what it looks like inside. Anyone know what's going on?

yep common problem, tranny needs to be pulled apart. I had the same issue, I used one of the trannyfix remedies you can find at walmart and it has temporarily cured my problem. Who knows how long it will last.

These transmissions must be junk. I just got rid of a lesabre that has the same engine /transmission and it was doing the same exact thing. Is it a shift solenoid or a pressure control solenoid, or a completely different part?

I wouldnt call it junk if it made it 85,000 miles, lots of people only make it to roughly 100k miles before a problem and at that point it's lived a good life for a part that wears 100% of the time you drive it.

It's just a known issue and many cars that GM made have them. The other likey problem was heat, 04+ cars transmissions run alot hotter and that will reduce it's life. Stinks for you but it looks like you'll need to have it rebuilt.

I've got 300,000 on a BMW with the original transmission, and a volvo with 190,000. I've never had a car with under 100k miles need a transmission rebuild.

Well these transmissions can last 100k or 300k, depends on driving, maintenance, and apparently luck is a big part. That is a common failure point which many of them may never see, luck of the draw I guess.

I wouldn't say these transmissions are junk, but they're certainly not great either.

Put some Lucas Stopslip in there and install a trans cooler. Keeps my car happy. Used to have that problem too.

It's crazy that so many people have the same problem. It sucks because it seems like these engines will last forever, but who wants to spend more money to get a transmission done than what the car is worth?

It really depends on how you drive it. If you get to your 100K miles by hitting every stoplight in the universe, then there will be more wear on items like that piston edge that is giving you the problem. I have bought many of these cars that had upward of 180K miles on them with perfectly good original transmissions in them. Likely they were highway cruisers for many of those miles.

I understand where you are coming from. With these 3800 powered cars, in whatever form they come, usually the rest of the car is falling apart around the motor when the mileage gets higher.

However, despite all this, when you sort out the issues not many other cars return the fuel economy, comfort, and cheapness to maintain of the 3800 chariots.
