transmission interchange?

Hi, Ive got a quick question that I cant seem to find the answer to. I just obtained a 96 grand prix se 3.1 auto and the trans is bunk so I need a new one, my question is what transmissions will interchange with this car year and model wise, Im looking for a used trans and dont want to be limited to finding a 96 gp donor if I dont have to be. I really dont care if the gear ratio's are the same, just as long as it would bolt up and everything would plug in and the car would be driveable. thanks in advance
 


There are a lot of variations on these transmissions and being 13 years old now you are really going to be limited on what you can find that is still a good used trans. If you go to car-part.com and search for a trans for your car it will pull up a list of all of the available transmissions from numorous parts yards that should interchange with what you have and many of them will likely show up from different cars but it follows the interchange book. You will have to call the places selling the trans to verify it will work and they should be able to look that up also. Most every salvage yard should have this info if you ask while looking for a used trans.
