Trans sticking between gears

I drove my 02 GTP to work this morning and I pull up next to a focus who seems to be in a hurry. I don't like fords in front of me so I gave it some gas when the light goes green (20%). The car bogs and is acting like its stuck between second and first. I yank the shifter to first and it fixes it, but the focus got the jump. This has happened a few times, the car doesn't want to go and pulling the shifter into first fixes it.
Any ideas what's causing it?
