trans revs out

i have a 96 GP 4 door. its nothing pretty i know but i bought it for 300 from my sister as my first car so i like it. ive worked out just about every issue it had but now im down to the last and biggest.

if i "granny drive" it drives perfectly fine but if i get into high rpm ranges 4000+ and im on the gas at least halfway it slips out of gear and just revs out, i have to let off the gas, let the rpms come all the way down and kinda sooth it into gear by depressing and releasing the pedal very gently.

shifts between 1st and 2nd seems rough at times but all other gears shift smooth. is my trans going out or is it an easily replaceable part within the trans?

i am very mechanically inclined just dont know much about trans at all. i went to my local trans shop and they scanned it and said the car wouldn't go above 45mph and i couldn't drive more than 10 mins on the freeway without the trans overheating so much it would start smoking so i would have to replace the whole thing right then and there and since i took the freeway at 80 mph more than 20 mins to get there i was feeling a scam coming on so i said screw them they're just trying to make money off me. lol

Sounds like you do need a new trans its slipping bad, how does the fluid look?

not so great. pretty brown. i want to change it but the last time i changed trans fluid it was super super gritty with tons of metal shavings and that trans died right after the fluid change i guess old gritty fluid can act like sandpaper and maintain contact between gears or whatever. anyway since that little incident im afraid to change trans fluid now.
