Tranny???

So I'm on the virge of fixing all the little problems with this new GP and now this one crops up. I'm going to assume it's something to do with the tranny but not a clue where to start with it.

Trans seems like it shifts good at times and others it shifts rough or doesn't shift or down shift correctly. Example, I'll be driving down a normal level road and the car will shift into 4th I'm assuming. Then it seems like the exhaust gets a little louder and the engine gets a "sluggish" feeling. The only way to get out of this is to either step on the gas or manual downshift to 3rd to get the normal feel back. Also this happens quite often going into a hill. Just feels like the tranny doens't know what gear it should be in.

I have no idea about trannys other than everytime I hear someone talk about them they usually say it cost them 1-2000 bucks to fix a tranny problem. I would start with replacing the solenoids, but I don't really know where they are, how many, or how much they are per. This is my DD so trying to do little repairs when I can and not trying to break the bank are concerns too.

Thanks

Sounds like to me that your tranny shifts into 4th, then locks up the convertor, and for your driving style, it is just too early.

I would see if you can find someone around your area to change your shift points and TCC lockup a little to better suit your driving.

If the transmission is shifting into all gears ok then dont worry about solenoids or internal trans problems yet. The pcm-powertrain control module- controls all transmission functions, so if you have any engine sensors intermittantly acting up or failing then it will have a direct effect on transmission operation. I would have the car checked for any trouble codes in the history as well as use a scan tool to view some general engine data such as the TPS, MAF, MAP, 02 sensors, VSS, etc to assure that everything engine wise is running as it should. It will shift into 4th around the 40-46mph mark at light throttle and also the torque converter has a clutch inside that will lock up and make the car feel a bit lazy, but it shouldnt be to the point you are describing nor shift the shift timing be hit and miss. Have the car checked out for the above areas of the engine and trans data and see if anything turns up.
